One electrical practice I avoid whenever possible is sharing neutrals between circuits.
Here’s the simplest way I can explain it:
Imagine two busy highways carrying traffic across town. Everything works fine because each highway has its own route.
Now imagine both highways depending on the same bridge.
As long as that bridge stays in perfect condition, traffic continues to flow. But if the bridge develops a problem, traffic from both highways is affected at the same time.
That’s how shared neutrals can impact an electrical system.
When a shared neutral connection becomes loose, damaged, or disconnected, it can create problems on multiple circuits simultaneously, including:
⚡ Flickering lights
⚡ Lights becoming unusually bright or dim
⚡ Damage to electronics and appliances
⚡ Difficult-to-diagnose electrical issues
⚡ Overheated conductors and connections
⚡ Increased fire risk
Many homeowners don’t realize they have shared neutrals until they begin experiencing strange electrical problems throughout the home.
While shared neutrals can be installed under certain circumstances, my preference is to avoid them whenever practical. Simpler electrical systems are generally easier to troubleshoot, easier to maintain, and often provide fewer opportunities for a single failure to affect multiple areas of a home.
