A wooden door is more than just a way to enter and exit a room; it's a complex system with many parts working together.

The door slab is the main part of the door that you see and open. It can be made of solid wood or a combination of wood and other materials. The door jamb is the frame that holds the door slab in place. It's made up of two vertical pieces (side jambs) and a horizontal piece at the top (head jamb). The casing is the decorative trim around the door jamb that hides the gap between the jamb and the wall.

To make the door function, it needs hinges, which are the metal pieces that attach the door slab to the jamb and allow it to swing. At the bottom of the door, the threshold seals the gap between the door and the floor to keep out drafts and pests.

For better performance, doors often have weatherstripping to seal the gaps and keep out the elements. And of course, there's the hardware, which includes the doorknob, lock, and other parts that help you use the door.

Some doors have extra features like mullions, which are vertical dividers in doors with multiple panels, and sidelights, which are narrow windows on the sides of the door. The glass panels in a door are called glazing, and they can be single, double, or even triple-paned for better insulation.

Each part of a wooden door, big or small, plays a role in how it looks and works.

To choose the best type of wood for your door, it’s important to consider both style and durability. Here’s a broader selection of wood types, including some popular varieties and others specific to the Pennsylvania region:

Oak:
Oak is known for its strength and distinctive grain. It’s ideal for high-traffic doors as it withstands wear and tear well. Its color and texture also add a classic touch to any space.

Walnut:
With its deep, dark tones, walnut is a luxurious option that brings elegance to any environment. Its durability and sophisticated appearance make it an excellent choice for refined interiors.

Cherry:
Cherry wood darkens over time, adding a touch of sophistication and evolving character. It’s perfect for interiors seeking a classic, timeless style.

Pine:
Pine is a softer, more affordable wood, ideal for painted doors. Its light weight and ease of workability make it a popular choice for custom designs.

Spanish Cedar:
Spanish cedar is famous for its moisture resistance and insect-repellent properties. It’s an excellent choice for exterior doors or humid climates. Its natural aroma adds extra value, making it perfect for those seeking an exotic touch.

Maple:
Native to Pennsylvania, maple is a hard and durable wood, known for its light color and fine grain. It’s ideal for doors requiring both strength and elegance. Maple can be both decorative and functional, suitable for natural or stained finishes.

American Sycamore:
Another wood common in Pennsylvania, sycamore is prized for its unique grain and colors ranging from white to light brown. It’s sturdy and offers a distinctive look for those seeking something different.

Expert Tip:
Consider your region’s climate when selecting wood. In areas with high humidity or extreme temperatures, species like Spanish cedar or oak are more suitable due to their stability in varying conditions.

At Beechdale Woodworks, we help you choose the wood type that best suits your needs and style, ensuring a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing result.
