One of the most avoidable ways homeowners lose mature trees is during home renovation and construction work. A new addition, a driveway expansion, a pool installation: all of these bring heavy equipment and soil disturbance within range of root systems that took decades to establish.

The problem isn't always immediate. Root damage from compaction and excavation can take one to three years to fully show up in the canopy. By the time a tree starts declining noticeably, the cause is often construction work that happened seasons earlier. At that point, the damage is done.

ACE approaches tree preservation as a proactive service, not a reactive one. After a tree comes down, the stump left behind is easy to put out of mind. It's not in the way, it's not falling on anything. But there are good reasons to deal with it sooner rather than later.

Left in place, stumps become a magnet for pests — termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles all colonize decaying wood, and proximity to the home is a real concern. Stumps also continue to produce root sprouts for years, pulling energy from nearby plants and pushing up through grass. And in a lawn, they're a tripping hazard and a mowing obstacle that never quite goes away.

Stump grinding is the most common and cost-effective solution. ACE's equipment grinds the stump down well below ground level, reduces it to wood chips, and leaves the area ready for sod, mulch, or replanting. It doesn't require excavation, and the whole process on a standard stump typically takes less than an hour. For situations where a full root system needs to come out, ACE can discuss that option too.

The emerald ash borer has been moving through Alabama, and if you have ash trees on your property, now is the time to get eyes on them.

This invasive beetle kills ash trees by tunneling beneath the bark and cutting off the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients. Infested trees typically decline over two to four years, and by the time the damage is obvious from the outside, the tree is often already too compromised to save. Early signs include thinning canopy from the top down, increased woodpecker activity (they hunt the larvae), and S-shaped tunnels visible under loose or splitting bark.

The challenge is that EAB spreads quickly, and ash trees that look fine this summer can be in serious decline by next year. Treatment options do exist and are most effective in the early stages of infestation, before canopy dieback becomes severe. ACE's ISA Certified Arborist can assess ash trees on your property and give you an honest picture of their current health and your realistic options, including both treatment and, where removal is the right call, safe takedown before the tree becomes a hazard.
