The performing arts are about more than what happens on stage. The spaces surrounding the performance shape how people gather, connect, learn, and experience culture together.

Emily shares her personal experience and perspective on designing performing arts spaces that support creativity, strengthen community, and create meaningful experiences beyond the curtain call.

From theaters and rehearsal spaces to lobbies, classrooms, and gathering areas, thoughtful design can elevate every part of the experience.

I remember one of the aspects that initially drew me to Davis Architects was their expertise in performing arts design, including both UAB’s Alys Stephens Center and WorkPlay .  I was thrilled when I began my first week at Davis as an architectural intern assigned to the design team for

In what feels like a true full circle moment, Neil Davis has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Samford University.

For decades, Neil has helped shape the physical identity of Samford’s campus, continuing a relationship between DAVIS and the university that began in the 1950s. Through thoughtful planning, timeless architecture, and a deep understanding of the Samford experience, his work has helped define the campus generations of students call home.

Neil has led the design of some of Samford’s most recognizable and impactful spaces, including:

• Beeson School of Divinity, a cornerstone of theological education designed to reflect both tradition and community.

• Ralph W. Beeson University Center Renovation, the functional heart of campus that continuously buzzes with student life, collaboration, and connection.

• Brock School of Business at Cooney Hall, a transformational academic environment preparing the next generation of business leaders.

• Seibert Hall Renovation & Addition, thoughtfully preserving one of Samford’s most historic buildings while creating dynamic new spaces for gathering, learning, and campus life.

This recognition reflects not only a remarkable architectural career, but also decades of partnership, vision, and investment in the future of Samford University. Congratulations, Neil, and thank you for helping shape a campus that means so much to so many.

Bryant-Denny Stadium has grown into one of the most iconic venues in college football, with DAVIS helping shape its transformation for decades.

From major expansions like the north and south end zones to ongoing renovations, premium seating, fan spaces, and upgraded player facilities, our work has helped define how the stadium is experienced today.

Now, as live music returns for the first time in over 30 years, the stadium takes on a whole new kind of spotlight, bringing a different kind of experience to the stadium.

With over 100,000 seats and an atmosphere that’s already unmatched, it’s hard to imagine a better setting for a night like this.

We love the new look.

Tuscaloosa is one step closer to welcoming a major new cultural destination, created in partnership with Terry and Nick Saban.

The Saban Center has officially topped out in the River District, marking a big milestone ahead of its 2027 opening. This first-of-its-kind campus will bring together STEM and the arts in a dynamic, immersive environment.

The 118,000-square-foot facility spans nearly 8 acres and features a striking 70-foot glass tower, home to an 18-foot illuminated globe powered by advanced display technology. The exterior will also showcase locally sourced recycled marble from the Alabama Marble Mineral & Mining Company, grounding the project in regional craftsmanship and material heritage.

This week, the Masters takes center stage.

But behind every great round is something just as important. The place.

Our own Jim Hartsell writes about the quiet, character-filled clubhouses of Scotland. The ones that don’t make the broadcast, but shape the experience in ways that last.

It’s something we think about every time we design a golf facility. How it feels before the round. After the round. And everything in between.

Because the best courses don’t just host the game. They become part of it.
