Mission Statement
Ann Kathryn Lohman LLC., handles professional landscape design and landscape
project management. The ethos of this company is to blend the client’s vision and enjoyment
of the land with greenscape improvements to the surrounding area and community. In landscape design, there are often diverse needs, opportunities, and wants which are
balanced by the realities of the client a

nd the site. I draw from my personal background,
travels, education and on the job multi-role experience, to accomplish lasting value in the
finished project. In the role of project manager it is best to get an understanding of the client’s
budget ability, taste, and expectations to better fill their needs and to be able to complete the
project on budget. When developing projects in this manner it will lead to positive results
and grow further business relationships with these clients and resulting referrals. Brief Biography
My interest in landscapes started at a young where I was exposed to traditional
southern and mid-altantic aesthetic influences. As a young child growing up in Virginia, we
often visited Colonial Williamsburg, known for it’s gardens and spent much time in
Washington D.C..The capitol offered a chance to enjoying it’s abundant green spaces, such as
the mall, memorials, statuary and other architecture under a formulated city plan. In my early
teens, I attended boarding school in the lovely city of Baltimore Maryland, at the historical
St.Timothy’s School for girls. While I was there I was asked to plan an addition to, and
maintain, the senior garden. The senior garden follows the traditional English garden layout;
to this day it is still a part of the campus and thriving. For college I went to Auburn University. Initially, I placed into Chemical Engineering
under early admission but I soon followed my true passion Architecture. Course work in
Architecture further developed and enhanced my understanding elements of design, and
offered the tools to realize them. Intent to gain real world experience from utilizing my theory
from the classroom, I took a job in the University’s facilities service working on the campus
landscape and gardens. There I rose from a laborer to a crew chief over three years while in
school and after receiving my degree in Architecture. This job provided the opportunity to
learn a variety of skills from propagation, greenhouse management, to development of plans
for actual seasonal landscapes, and perhaps more importantly gave me the critical experience
of running hired crews employed by the University. Furthermore, I gained an in-depth wealth
of knowledge of regionally grown flowers, shrubs, trees, and planting materials. This in turn
gave me the understanding of purchasing, placement, and maintenance on a large scale. In my
mind, my greatest contribution to these projects was being able to develop new and better
choices to fit the campus’s project budget, and to enhance the overall layout. Needless to say, I
got my hands dirty early on! After that I moved to Birmingham, Alabama and worked for a well regarded nursery
supporting installation and running the maintenance crew for clients that were primarily
residential. After a few years, I wanted to progress and utilize all of my skills beyond
residential and maintenance in the hopes of combining my knowledge of landscapes and
hardscapes. Following a meeting with Ni**od Long, III, a regionally prominent landscape
architect, I took his advice to train as a certified master gardener, and to become fluent in
auto-cadd. Thereafter I was hired by his firm and gained insights into the field of urban
planning, corporate design and greenscapes. I honed many relevant tools and earned
experience in master planning for large commercial office parks,
Projects I worked on included The Summit, Church of
the Highlands, sidewalk projects around Mountain Brook, Mountain Brook sports park, and
the UAB Green
To be well-rounded in the field, I needed to understand the contractor’s perspective. After working three and half years at NLA, I went to work for one of the oldest and well respected
contractors located in Birmingham, Landscape Services, Inc..Here I was able to learn
role reversal in the perspective of the architect and contractor. I formulated an understanding
of pricing the job and the relationship of the contractor to the architect. Working thought the different phases of landscaping to landscape design I have
earned experience in theory and practice, design expertise, and the respect of my peers. Working in a variety of levels and roles has giving me the ability to distinguish between them
and how they interact with the client and ultimately to achieve the project goal. Planning and
executing while facilitating a productive interacting among the parties has made Ann
Kathryn Lohman LLC. a success in the field of landscaping and landscape design. large-scale residential master plans, urban parks, streetscape designs, and landscape development for commercial, residential, and institutional properties. Contact Information -
