Those tiny granules on asphalt shingles help protect the roof from UV rays and everyday weather exposure. As shingles age and those granules begin wearing away, you may start noticing lighter or patchy areas like this.

Another thing many homeowners don’t realize, a roof with significant granule loss can become extremely slippery. Those loose granules can act almost like tiny ball bearings under your feet, making the roof much more dangerous to walk on.
