It's bats!! 🦇
October 24-31 is international Bat Week! That's right, a full week celebration of our world's only winged and fully-flighted mammal. Wisconsin holds events across the state for opportunities to learn, observe, and celebrate bats! While they are usually out of our sight during the night, they are very busy maintaining our ecosystems — eating insects, pollinating flowers, and spreading seeds. With more than 200 bat species currently at risk of extinction, conservation awareness is important.
In Wisconsin, we have 8 total bat species. 4 are defined as cave species, and 4 as tree species. The species include: Big brown bat (cave), Eastern red bat (tree), Evening bat (tree), Hoary bat (tree), Little brown bat (cave), Northern long-eared bat (cave), Silver-haired bat (tree), and Tricolored bat (cave). 4 of our 8 bat species in Wisconsin are categorized as state threatened.
🎥 Lights Out Wisconsin wishes to remind us about turning lights out not only for migrating birds - but bats too. Join them in Madison on Sunday, October 25, 2:00-4:00 PM for a free screening of the film The Invisible Mammal — popcorn, socializing, and networking with related organizations will be provided!
🗓️ Visit Bat Week’s website: https://batweek.org/ and search for an event near you, or participate in an online event from anywhere!
