In the corner of an old farmhouse bathroom stood a clawfoot bathtub named Pearl.
She had once been the pride of the house.
Children splashed in her warm water, their laughter bouncing off the tile walls. Young parents sang songs while washing shampoo from tiny curls. On winter nights, tired hands would turn her silver taps, and steam would rise like ghosts carrying away the day's worries.
Pearl knew secrets.
She knew about the little girl who practiced speeches in the mirror before school. She knew about the father who sat on her edge after long shifts, staring at the floor in silence before finding the strength to smile again. She knew about the grandmother who soaked aching bones and whispered stories to herself because there was no one left to tell them to.
Years passed.
The children grew up. The songs stopped. The house became quieter.
Dust gathered in the corners.
One by one, the voices disappeared until only the wind came to visit, slipping through cracks in the window frame.
Pearl waited.
She waited through summers filled with silence and winters cold enough to make her porcelain ache. She kept hoping she'd hear footsteps again... the familiar creak of the floorboards... the turn of her taps.
But one morning, strangers came.
They wore heavy boots and carried clipboards. They talked about "renovation" and "modern updates."
One of them ran a hand along Pearl's chipped edge and said, "Beautiful... but nobody wants these old things anymore."
Nobody.
When they lifted her from the floor, for the first time in nearly a century, Pearl saw the square of clean tile beneath where she'd stood all those years.
It was the only place in the room untouched by time.
As they carried her out the front door, she caught one last glimpse of the hallway where children used to race past, laughing.
And if bathtubs could cry, the rain that fell that afternoon might have had something to do with it......
