Neat old barn we renovated last year
Beckman Heritage Farms marks 175 years of family farm ownership today
Beckman Heritage Farms, located at 14572 N. Prairie Grove Rd., Burlington, today marks its 175th year in operation as a family farm.
On March 8, 1842, Maria Beckman, an immigrant from Germany, purchased 160 acres eight miles north of Burlington. On Nov. 1, 1845, she sold the farm, but the new owner went into foreclosure on Oct. 17, 1848. On Dec. 19 of that year, Maria purchased the farm for a second time at a sheriff's sale; the Beckman family has continuously retained ownership of the property since that date.
Doug and Heather Beckman currently own and operate the farm, growing corn and soybeans along with an expanding agritourism operation. Pumpkins, a corn maze, and family activities take place in the fall, while nature and history tours are available throughout the year and by appointment.
There are two original barns remaining on the farm, one of which was built prior to the Civil War. The other barn, built in 1895, has been restored and is used for events throughout the year. There is also a summer kitchen and a small workshop building. An annual Fall Market is held in September and this year featured 75 vendors and was attended by thousands of visitors.
The Beckman family is focused on preservation, conservation, and sustainability to ensure the farm continues with their own children and future generations.
