Great article and a good reminder that the native plantings we create, regardless of scope and intent, are ultimately still gardens. Garden and landscape rules still apply here (right plant, right place, regular upkeep and maintenance, and WATERING). We're not sure when or where the misnomer of native plantings requiring little or no maintenance originated, but we include maintenance guidelines and expectations in our client projects to do our best to ensure success. Also, when it comes to naturally occurring remnant plant communities: once it's gone, it's gone.

All plants grown in the garden are native to somewhere, just not necessarily to our local region.

Come see us at the fair (well, sort of!)

We're happy to be included in the Minnesota State Fair's "Adopt-a-garden" program for the 2nd year. It's a modest, yet effective habitat garden that creates a safe space for pollinators and shows off some late-season celebratory color. See the link below for a full list and descriptions of the State Fair Gardens.

Bee and Pollinator Books by Heather Holm keeps putting together these lovely story maps that make it very easy to understand concepts surrounding our native pollinators and their needs. Check this one out - with the weather warming we're bound to see these critters flying soon! 🐝💚

My latest storymap titled Signs of Spring, features the unequal cellophane bee (Colletes inaequalis). Learn more about the natural history of this early spring solitary bee and the native plants it depends on:

My friend Michael Lynch asked me to create a meme (suitable for the upper Midwest and Northeast) that illustrates plants that bloom before or coflower with dandelions. Do not assume that dandelions alone are sufficient at supporting bees. Willows, violets, waterleaf, geranium, bellwort (merrybells) are just a few examples of spring-blooming native plants that support pollen-collecting specialist bees. You can plant a willow that hosts over 300 species of caterpillars and supports as many as 13 specialists - talk about ecosystem functionality - or you can continue to believe that dandelions will help all the bees.
