Friends of the Mississippi River is proud to be a charity partner for a new 10-mile race, Mightyssippi, along the Mississippi River in St. Paul this spring.

To learn more and register, go to fmr.org/participate/events and scroll down to the link for the run

Participants will set off on Mississippi River Boulevard in Highland Park, running alongside the river we work hard to protect. Around mile 5, you’ll enter Crosby Farm Regional Park, the site of an ongoing FMR restoration and an excellent example of community-driven renewal.

This course winds through towering trees, along tranquil lakes, and beneath scenic bridges, culminating at Upper Landing Park. Each step is a testament to the river’s enduring beauty and the vibrant life it sustains. When you cross the finish line, a convenient shuttle will return you to the start.

For everyone who joins the run, this is a unique opportunity to experience the awe of the Mississippi and answer the call to safeguard its future. Together, we run not just for ourselves, but for the generations who will one day cherish these waters as we do.

LUNSETH is proud to sponsor The Run More, Judge Less 5K (formerly Downtown Run Around). It's more than a race — it’s a gathering rooted in belonging. Hosted by .mn this inclusive community run is built on the belief that the transformative power of running should be accessible to everyone — especially those who have been historically excluded from traditional running spaces. We invite people of all backgrounds, paces, and lived experiences to come together and move side by side.

Go to mileinmyshoes.mn/run-more-judge-less-5k and use the "Register" button at the bottom of the page.

New for 2026, we’re excited to offer both a 5K and a 1-mile distance, in partnership with Midsummer Mile, creating more accessible entry points into movement and community. Held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on a summer evening, this is less about the finish line and more about what happens when people move together without judgment.

Join us in person for the run and a post-race party with custom cookie medals, Johnny Pops, fruit, a finisher photo area, and more. Kids can join a free 1/3 mile run. You can also join virtually and support Mile in My Shoes members from anywhere.

Blue Thumb - Planting for Clean Water is launching a new initiative this summer and fall through the Lawns to Legumes program. This year, Lawns to Legumes does not have funding to do a fall round of grants, so we are trying out a free educational program folks can sign up for called Lawns to Legumes: Habitat at Home.

This guided program supports Minnesotans in creating, expanding, or maintaining pollinator-friendly spaces this summer and fall. Participants receive seasonal step-by-step guidance, access to webinars and resources, and opportunities to connect with a community across the state, without the need for a grant application.

They need your help spreading the word! The open sign-up period is active, and programming starts in mid-June. Here are some resources you can use for sharing:

While there will not be a Fall 2026 grant round, Lawns to Legumes will open applications for Spring 2027 grants later this summer. Minnesotans can sign up to be notified when Spring 2027 grant applications open at bluethumb.org/lawns-to-legumes/apply/

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) is partnering with Dual Citizen Brewing for an inspiring concert featuring Minnesota artists Tina Schlieske and Molly Maher. Bring your friends, grab a drink, and enjoy the live music all while supporting FMR's work to protect the Mississippi River and its watershed.

Throughout May, FMR is teaming up with Dual Citizen's Dual Purpose program to make a big impact on the river. Every ticket you buy and every gift you make during the concert will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Dual Citizen, up to $10,000.

Tickets are just $54 per person (fees included), and proceeds will go directly towards protecting the Mississippi River. Secure your tickets now and join the fun.

Friends of the Mississippi River invites you to join them for a morning removing invasive species at the Minneapolis River Gorge sand flats (sometimes called the Longfellow flats), known for large sandy beaches and a wonderful river-edge view. Working alongside FMR staff, volunteers will remove garlic mustard.

Garlic mustard can spread rapidly and prevent other plants from growing, but it's easy to identify and quick to pull by hand. Volunteers will see a dramatic difference in ground cover by the end of this event — making room for native plant species and improving wildlife habitat. Patches of bloodroot and wild ginger, two native woodland plants, are expanding in this area as we reduce garlic mustard.

All are welcome, but capacity is limited, and registration is required. As always, all tools and training will be provided, and volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace and comfort level. Learn more and register at fmr.org/events

Minnesota homeowners know that a beautiful lawn can be challenging even in ideal conditions. Add dense tree cover, north-facing yards, long winters, and limited sunlight, and growing healthy turf becomes even more difficult. Shady lawns often struggle with thin grass, moss growth, soil compaction, and increased disease pressure.

The good news is that a thriving lawn in low-light conditions is possible — especially when you focus on building healthy soil and using organic lawn care practices that work with Minnesota’s climate instead of against it.

Davis Farm Park in the City of Otsego, MN lies along a stretch of Mississippi River backchannel north of the Twin Cities. The park is across from one of the islands that make up the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Mississippi River Islands Scientific and Natural Area, a string of riverine islands within a 7-mile stretch of the Mississippi.

This is a relatively new site for Friends of the Mississippi River, which started working here in 2024. As they restore a remnant oak savanna in the park, they need to remove garlic mustard, an invasive species. At this event, you'll hand-pull the garlic mustard from a 2-acre flat area just off a mowed trail. Removing garlic mustard will slow its aggressive spread and give native plants a chance to become established, creating better habitat for insects and wildlife.

All are welcome, but capacity is limited, and registration is required. As always, all tools and training will be provided, and volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace and comfort level. Learn more and register at fmr.org/events
