Try something new… step out of your comfort zone…
A few months ago, we had the opportunity to be an artist mentor to help raise money for the Arthritis Foundation. Children who have juvenile arthritis were paired with assorted artists from around Kansas City to create items to be auctioned off at their annual gala.
I was paired with a young baseball player from just down the road We collaborated to come up with a faux stacked stone fountain because it reminded him of a book they read in his family to help navigate the challenges that come with having arthritis. This kid was amazing creative, funny, and a very quick learner we had a great time creating our pieces.
It was a pretty fun and easy experience… Until the day of the event. Rally up to the point that we delivered them to the space and put on a suit and realized there would be many hundreds of people in attendance checking out what we had made. I’ve made a lot of things for individuals to judge… but never for a huge room full of people!
After we made it to the stage, everything happened super fast. In the end, a nice couple bought the pieces for $6,500! I think that’s a huge success… and a great number to beat for next year.
But it wouldn’t be a project I was involved in without a funny twist ending. The couple that bought the fountains live in Bentonville, AR. Just a quick 219 miles down the road. They were super nice and it made for a fun day trip.
We are so proud to have been able to have this experience, help out a great cause, and try something we’ve never done before. We’ll let you know how it goes next year!
