After two months of updates, it’s time for the final send-off to our Sunflower Memorial. 🌻

We watched it grow, bloom, fade, and now we’re saving seeds to see what comes back next spring.

Worm Coliseum vs. 14 pounds of food scraps! 🪱⚔️

This time we scored a mix of watermelon and cantaloupe from Food Lion after so many of you suggested asking the manager. They hooked us up, and now the Coliseum is facing its biggest test yet.

Don’t worry, we’ll post some updates along the way.

Over/under is set at 12 days. Let the games begin.

Today we harvested the Mama Town worm bin! 🪱

This bin took about three months of feeding to fill up, and today it was finally time to dump it out and see what we had.

Now the castings are headed to the sifting tent to dry out before we process everything.

Stay tuned — we’ll let you know how many total gallons of worm castings we harvested from this one bin.

Day 19 of our beginner worm bin, and we finally built a proper top using an old window screen. That should help keep any flies or other unwanted visitors from getting in or out.

This is also the first time we’ve added any water since starting the bin. We’ve increased the feeding to two cups, and at this point we’re pretty much on a five-day feeding cycle.

So we’ll check back in five days and see how much of that food they were able to get through.

Today we received our first shipment of supplies as we gear up for the fall farmers market, new bottles and new labels!

We had to order more bottles than I would have liked, but ordering fewer would have nearly doubled our cost per bottle once shipping was added.

The Worm Coliseum vs. 9 pounds, 7 ounces of banana peels! 🍌

After the first three days, it didn’t look like the worms were going to beat the 9-pound watermelon challenge. But never underestimate the power of a hungry worm army.

This past weekend we had a visitor from Big O's Worm Farm - New Page

We actually connected through WormPeople.com, a free resource for anyone interested in vermicomposting. Whether you’re just getting started, looking to learn more, or hoping to grow into a small commercial worm operation, there’s a lot of great information and a community of people at every stage.

It’s always fun getting to meet other worm people, swap ideas, and learn from each other. 🪱

Day 6 update. 🍌🪱

These worms have been busy.

They might be small, but they’re mighty. We’ve had a lot of fun with the predictions and comments since the original setup video.

🪱 Worm Bin Update - It’s been five days since our last feeding, and this time we found an unexpected visitor.

All of the food is gone, the moisture looks good, and the worms are doing exactly what we want them to do but we also found black soldier fly larvae in the bin.

Black soldier flies don’t bite or sting, and the larvae are excellent at breaking down organic material. But if they mature and get out, the adults can lay more eggs, so I’d rather keep them contained.

I’ve said before that a lid isn’t always necessary on a worm bin, most of mine are outside and I don’t use lids but now we’ve got a pretty good reason to make one for this indoor bin.
