Came across a Cicada Killer Wasp nest this week while servicing a lawn. They are a very intimidating creature, but displayed no aggression. I cut around the burrow and left the queen undisturbed. Keep an eye out and don’t let your kids disturb the burrow.

In mid- to late summer people begin to encounter large wasps with distinctive bands of white and yellow on black bodies. The head and thorax are a rusty red and the wings are tinged with yellow. The body is about 1.25 to 1.5 inches long. The wing span approaches three inches. Their large size and ha...

Centipedegrass Decline

Failure to green-up in the spring or successful green-up followed by decline and death in late spring and summer is a problem that can be encountered in centipedegrass-growing areas. Centipedegrass is subject to a condition called “centipedegrass decline.”

Many factors may contribute to this problem. It is important to be aware of these factors so that preventive and/or corrective steps can be taken. This problem can be prevented by proper management, which includes avoiding overfertilization, preventing thatch accumulation, irrigating during drought stress (particularly in the fall), and maintaining a mowing height of 1 to 1.5 in.

Why Fall Is the Best Time for Overseeding?

Fall is the time to perform your lawn overseeding because the soil temperature is still warm. Therefore, it is the perfect time for germinating grass seed. Plus, w**d seeds don’t germinate in the fall, and that means less competition for your new grass seedlings. The cooler air temperatures reduce pest and fungus growth, which helps protect your lawn from damage. And lastly, we tend to receive more rainfall in the autumn months, which is great for your new grass as well as your water bill.

What is the best time of year to trim hedges and shrubs?
The best time of year to trim your hedges and shrubs in the spring and fall seasons. However, the precise time within those seasons to trim is completely dependent on your individual situation. If your landscape is completely overgrown, then you should trim immediately. For your flowering plants, you will want to trim them after they are fully flowered. For non-flowing plants, you will want to trim them between late-winter and your spring cleanup. You will also want to complete the entire process again. The next time to complete the trimming of your hedges, shrubs, and rest of your landscape will be during the fall cleanup just before winter hits.

Fall may not seem like an ideal time to think about lawn care, considering that your grass will go dormant for the winter. However, autumn is a critical time to groom your lawn for beautiful growth next spring. Fall’s cool and moist weather helps grassroots develop much better than in summer, and taking advantage of this growing period will pay big dividends next year.

What Does Overwatering Look Like?

Interestingly, lawns that receive too much water are sometimes worse off than lawns that receive too little water. Overwatering can even block precious nutrients from reaching the roots. There are several things to look for if you’re worried you might be overwatering. Weeds such as crabgrass and even fungi can thrive in wet areas, and the puddles that can form from overwatering are great places for them to grow. Additionally, the overwatering can keep the roots from growing deeper and instead bring them to the surface and allow them to decompose, killing your grass. These exposed roots, w**ds, and fungi can attract more insects than normal. Keep an eye out for puddles of water and run-off, as these are signs of overwatering. Likewise, make sure you are not watering the street; no matter how much you irrigate, the pavement won’t grow. Water deeply and less frequently this summer, and many of your potential grass problems can be liquidated!

Grass seed is where grass comes from, and if you are dissatisfied with the way your yard looks, then you might be tempted to scatter some grass seeds and ensure that some new growth covers up those patches in your yard that aren’t as flattering.

However, having too much grass seed can result in a yard that is overgrown, thick, and susceptible to diseases that can ravage your yard. If you have very thick and tangled clumps of overgrown grass, then you have put way too much seed down.

Why does Mr. Mow it All always include edging in a lawn mowing service? We edge the lawn Because …

It Creates A Clean, Professional Look

Edging the lawn gives your entire yard a crisp, manicured appearance. If you leave those little tufts of grass sticking up along your landscape bed or creeping over your pavement it's going to look sloppy. And you don't really want that, right?

It Increases Curb Appeal and Value

Because lawn edging makes the whole yard look better it increases curb appeal. In fact, it's one of the simplest ways to make your entire yard look more attractive. And that increases the value of your landscape.

It Protects Landscaping From Grass Roots

Edging also serves a practical purpose. If left unchecked, grass will grow into landscape beds and over the edges of pavement. Edging creates a root barrier that stops grass from invading. And if you keep up with regular edging it will save you time when you're trimming.

Bermuda grass grows faster than the other warm-season grasses because it can spread through both aboveground stolon’s and underground stolon’s. This makes it able to stand up to hard wear, and is a popular choice for athletic fields and golf courses.
