Today's job was a permitted replacement of a 150 Amp interior panel. This home had the original Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panel, and insurance required it to be replaced. This home also suffered a fire in an outlet in the bedroom which was repaired.

Upon inspection of their exterior panel, a crack on the main breaker was noted. Since this panel is also a FPE panel, there are no replacement parts to correct the damage, only a replacement is recommended.

⚠ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲: Normal modern breakers fail 1% to 5% of the time, while FPE breakers fail up to 60% under overload tests.
⚠ 𝗡𝗼-𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁: Overloaded circuits stay on. The internal parts fail to shut off the power. Wires get too hot and start fires.

These pictures shown are from my client today who had an active kitchen outlet fire. Their FPE breaker did not trip to stop the power before the fire started. Again, another customer who was lucky that they were home and noticed the fire before it became a catastrophic scene. These are real situations that occur because of these panels, and why insurers are so insistent on them being replaced.

Today's job was a permitted install of 3 outdoor ceiling fans for a local church. They do community outreach for the homeless and individuals experiencing food insecurity by serving meals and providing non-perishable food and hygiene items to those in need in the area where they were being installed. This customer's AC breaker was tripping after their brand new AC was running for a period of time during our hot Florida afternoons. The breaker, which was properly sized and running minimal amperage, was so hot that you couldn't even touch it. Evidence shows melting wire nuts, degraded wires from the heat, and a damaged busbar.

This is what happens when someone who doesn't understand electrical systems works on them. An undersized wire was used for an AC condenser unit. This AC should have had #8 wire ran, and they used #10. Using an undersized wire on an electrical circuit is like trying to force water from a fire hose through a coffee straw. The wire creates high electrical resistance. This resistance generates excessive heat, melts the protective wire coating, and creates a severe fire hazard. It also causes voltage drop, leading to dim lights and damaged appliances.

Don't let just anyone work on your electrical systems. Hire a Licensed and Insured professional to ensure the proper codes are being followed to avoid a potential fire hazard 🔥
