The whole roof matters, but it's often the smaller areas that catch our attention.

Valleys, transitions, flashing, penetrations and the places where different parts of a roof meet don't take up much space in the finished picture. They do require attention while the roof is going together.

Here's some of those details from a recent project.

Most people will never notice them from the street. That's kind of the point.

We're getting to that part of the year when Treasure Valley mornings start feeling a little different, even if the afternoons haven't gotten the message yet.

Here's one from the warmer part of the roofing season.

We get to work on a lot of different houses around the valley, but a good roof really does have a way of finishing the look of a home.

That's something we can handle.

Blue Goat Roofing can remove the solar panels for the roof replacement and reinstall them afterward, so the roofing and solar work don't have to become two separate projects for the homeowner to coordinate.

The roof on one house doesn't always age at the same rate.

One slope might get full sun most of the day while another stays shaded. Trees can keep one area cooler and wetter, and different sides of the house can get very different amounts of wind and weather.

That's why one section of a roof can sometimes look noticeably different from another section that's exactly the same age.

Roofs have microclimates too, apparently.

A roof has to do more than keep rain and snow out.

Ventilation is part of the roofing system too. Intake vents allow outside air into the attic while exhaust ventilation gives warmer air a way out.

Most of it isn't particularly noticeable once the roof is finished—which is probably why shingles get all the attention.

But when we're replacing a roof, we're looking at how the whole system works, not just what you'll see from the street.

There's a reason roofing crews tend to like early mornings in August.

The air temperature is only part of the equation. Once the sun has been beating down on a roof for a few hours, the surface they're working on can get considerably hotter than the temperature you see on your phone.

With another hot week ahead, getting an early start makes a lot of sense.

Shingles get most of the attention, but some of the most important parts of a roof are the ones you barely notice from the ground.

Flashing is a good example. Anywhere the roof meets a wall, chimney or another transition, water has to be directed somewhere. Getting those details right matters just as much as getting the shingles right.

It's one of those parts of a finished roof that ideally you'll never have a reason to think about again.
