Having solar panels doesn't mean you have to put off replacing your roof.

The panels generally need to come off before the old roofing can be removed, and they need to be properly reinstalled once the new roof is finished.

Not all roofing warranties cover the same thing.

Some warranties come from the shingle manufacturer and primarily cover the roofing material. Others involve the contractor’s workmanship. The length of the warranty, what it actually covers, and whether it can transfer to a future homeowner can all vary.

It’s worth asking those questions before choosing a roofing proposal, not after the roof is already installed.

A 2,000-square-foot house doesn't necessarily have a 2,000-square-foot roof.
Roof pitch, overhangs, garages, and the overall shape of the roof all affect how much roofing material is needed.

Two houses with identical floor plans can have very different roof measurements, especially if one has a steep roof with several different sections.

It's one of the reasons roofing estimates involve more than just looking up the square footage of a house.

There’s a lot happening around a house during a roof replacement, not just on top of it.

Tear-off means thousands of nails, pieces of old shingles and other debris have to come off the roof and make it into the trailer without becoming a problem for the yard, driveway or landscaping.

Protecting the property and cleaning up properly are part of the roofing job too.

A question homeowners sometimes have before a roof replacement: Do I need to leave the house while the work is being done?

Usually, no.

Roof replacement is noisy, and there will be plenty of activity outside, but homeowners can generally stay home if they’re comfortable with that. If you work from home, have small children, or have pets that don’t appreciate all the noise overhead, spending part of the day somewhere quieter might be a good idea.

It’s one of those things that’s worth knowing before the crew shows up.

Most of a new roof disappears by the time the job is finished.

Homeowners see the new shingles, but a roof replacement involves a lot of work underneath them too. Depending on the roof, that can include checking the decking, installing underlayment, replacing flashing and setting up the ventilation before the final shingles go on.

The finished roof gets the pictures. A lot of the important work happens before you ever see it.

A roof can look completely clean from the ground and still have leaves and debris hiding in a few spots.

Valleys, areas behind chimneys, and places where different roof sections come together tend to collect more than the open parts of the roof.

Most of the time it’s nothing dramatic. It’s just worth keeping an eye on those areas, especially once the leaves start coming down in the fall.

Picking a new roof isn’t just about choosing a shingle. The color can make a pretty big difference in how the whole house looks. Siding, brick, stone, trim and even the style of the house can all change which colors look best.

If you’re replacing a roof, it’s worth spending a little time looking at actual homes with the colors you’re considering instead of making the decision from a small sample board.

Most people looking at a roof notice the shingles first. Some of the most important parts are a lot less noticeable.
Flashing is used where a roof meets things like walls, chimneys and other transitions. Those areas need to be detailed correctly because shingles alone aren’t designed to handle every place where two surfaces meet.
It’s one of those parts of a roofing job that might not get much attention when everything is finished, but getting the details right matters.
