Please join us in welcoming two new employees; Gregory and Natalie! We did an escape room to get to know our new research assistants. Escape rooms are a fun way to build team and communication. If you haven't tried one we can't recommend them enough, they are so much fun!

Gregory is a final year graduate student in the architecture program, following his four-year graduation from the University of Idaho Moscow Campus. Gregory is committed to architecture because of the lifelong learning opportunities and the potential to address environmental quality. More specifically Gregory is concerned with how architecture impacts carbon footprints and how we can address more nature centric design routes.

Natalie is currently earning an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Boise State University. Natalie has aspired to become an engineer since she began taking engineering classes in the 7th grade. Natalie has earned Microsoft Associate certificates in Python and Java programming. Natalie plans to pursue a master’s degree in aerospace engineering after earning her bachelors in mechanical engineering.

Lecture Topic - Indoor Air Quality During Lockdown by Elizabeth Cooper

Description:
Throughout the world governments instituted a variety of measures to try to curb the spread of COVID-19 and improve public health. In the UK that took the shape of a nationwide lockdown as of the 23rd of March 2020. This mandate continued until the 13th of June. These restrictions led to atypical patterns of home occupancy, the implications of which are still unknown.

The work shown in this presentation took advantage of an existing IAQ and window operation monitoring study taking place in east London, UK. One-year’s worth of monitored data on indoor and outdoor environment parameters along with occupant use of windows was used to analyze the impact of lockdown on IAQ and infer probabilistic models of window operation behavior. Moreover, using on-site CO2 data, monitored occupancy and operation of windows, the team calibrated a thermal performance model of one of the spaces to investigate the implications of alternative ventilation strategies.

The use of this type of model, one in which energy, thermal, and air quality performance is integrated has great potential to be used to better understand how changes in our built environment impact health, and at what cost. A conceptual framework for modelling health impact into the built environment will also be introduced.

Join us in welcoming our new employee, Isabelle.

Isabelle is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in civil engineering at Boise State University and is set to graduate in the Spring of 2022. Afterwards, she plans to continue living in her home town and pursue a masters of Architecture at the University of Idaho's Boise campus. Isabelle has developed a love for the built environment and how it interacts with nature and hopes to learn more about urban design and building science in her studies. When she is not in class or the office, she enjoys reading and traveling.

A personal note from Ken Baker.

Folks, it has been a pleasure working with you and the IDL staff over the past two and a half years. Becoming the Interim Director of the IDL was not anticipated but, as my very last public sector job (yes I plan to retire this summer), it has been a very satisfying experience. Working with our youthful and highly talented staff was truly a highlight of my career. I am impressed to the extreme with the talent, the dedication and belief in efficiency and sustainability I have seen in all of our staff. They bring their best every day.

As one of the five founders of the IDL, I have always believed in and supported the Lab. I am especially happy that we were able to build the amount of masters student interns to four over my tenure and that Damon will add to this number. Providing graduate engineering and architectural students with the opportunity to learn and apply the kind of real-world experience that will provide value to the design industry was a founding goal and my personal chief reason for supporting the creation of the IDL.

I can’t say enough good things about our new Interim Director. Already incredibly skilled, Damon is always working to improve himself and the Lab. Through his dedication, people oriented style and applied knowledge of energy efficiency, I believe the IDL will thrive. All of us at the lab are 100% behind him.

I’m very thankful for you, our clients, patrons and University of Idaho support system. I very much appreciate your good work.

The Integrated Design Lab is happy to announce our new interim director Dr. Damon Woods! Dr. Woods is honored to take the helm at IDL as interim director for 2021. From his start as a summer intern at IDL nine years ago to now, working at the lab has been a source of inspiration and pride. After finishing his master’s at Boise State, Damon joined the IDL as a full-time PhD student from 2013-2018 focusing on thermal comfort, energy modeling, and radiant systems. During that time, Damon was fortunate enough to receive mentorship under each of the previous directors: Kevin, Elizabeth, and Ken. Damon hopes to continue the traditions of applied research, innovative education, and community engagement, which have been hallmarks of the IDL ever since its inception in 2004 under Ken Baker and Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg. Damon’s three main goals for the lab in 2021 are to:

1. Support more architecture and engineering students at the lab so they can bring the principles of integrated design into practice.
2. Expand the lab’s research avenues so that the IDL can provide Idaho’s design firms relevant insights on emerging building technologies.
3. Establish new partnerships with both industry and government so that together we can help build a more sustainable and resilient future for all Idahoans.

Please join us in welcoming our new employee; Jason Talford

Jason graduated from Boise State University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on energy efficiency systems. He is excited to keep his roots in the treasure valley by pursuing a masters of mechanical engineering with the University of Idaho in Boise and is looking forward to a career focused on the communities he calls home.

Our last engineering intern, Jubin Mathai graduated with his masters this spring. Jubin took a job at University of New Hampshire (he was also offered a funded Ph.D. position at University of Ottowa). We wish the best of luck in his career pursuits.

IDL - Integrated Design Lab

The University of Idaho Integrated Design Lab in Boise [IDL] is dedicated to the development of high-performing energy efficient buildings in the Intermountain West. This is approached through research, education and outreach efforts with students, owners, and professional design and construction teams to transform design practice and keep pace with technologies, materials and methods of construction that best meet the needs of building owners and society in general. Those who utilize the resources available through the IDL will design and construct buildings that are more comfortable for people, follow best practice design approaches, require less energy to maintain and operate, and enhance the health and productivity of inhabitants.
