Clusias Pruning: Objectives and Best Practices (young clusias between 3-4 ft tall)
Goal:
✔ Shape the plant
✔ Encourage dense growth from the bottom
✔ Prevent a leggy appearance
Best time to prune:
👉 Spring (March–April in Florida)
How to prune:
✂️ Light tip trimming (2–4 inches)
✂️ Focus on long or uneven shoots
How much to cut:
🔹 No more than 15–20% per pruning
Frequency:
🔁 Every 6–8 weeks during the growing season
✅ Result: Fuller, stronger, well-shaped clusias.
Mature / Large Clusias
Goal:
✔ Control height and width
✔ Rejuvenate the plant
✔ Improve overall structure
Best time to prune:
👉 Late winter to early spring
How to prune:
✂️ Remove dead or damaged branches first
✂️ Reduce height gradually
✂️ Cut thicker branches back to a node or junction
How much to cut:
🔹 Max 30–40% in one pruning
(Heavy reductions should be done in stages)
Frequency:
🔁 1 major pruning per year
🔁 1–2 light maintenance trims
