Small homes can demand big thinking.

This custom Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Southwest Harbor, Maine, on Mount Desert Island, was built as a fully functional small home designed around the homeowners' needs and the character of the Maine coast.

Two Storey Building served as the Design/Builder, overseeing the project from design through construction and coordinating the architectural design with building science expert and architect Steve Baczek.

The result goes beyond a compact footprint. The cottage is an energy-efficient, high-performance home with an all-electric heat pump HVAC system, designed to be comfortable and efficient while fitting naturally into its coastal setting.

From the eclectic interior details to the way the home performs, every part of the cottage was considered as part of the whole.

Once the drywall goes up, you won't see the framing, insulation, wiring, plumbing, waterproofing, or mechanical systems behind it.
