This brand new driveway looked so nice! The natural colors and the smooth river rock.

Unfortunately, it didn't last long.
After it's first rain, it became very unstable, to the point a delivery truck got stuck.

We did NOT install this driveway.

We design our gravel driveways so this does not happen. There's a reason we do what we do. To prevent this.

There's a lot more to building a lasting gravel driveway than just throwing some sand and rock down.

We did smooth it back out for them. But it will do the same thing again unfortunately.

This gravel pad we built in Fannin County is ready for its shed!

This area is very sandy. Like a river bottom almost. To help with stability, we added a structural geotextile fabric down first, then added flex base gravel on top. Of course we compacted it!

Do you have trees growing that look like this?

These are honey locust trees.
Very common in pastures and fields all across North Texas.

These can grow thorns up to 8" long or more!
Yes, they hurt. (I know from experience)
These can easily picture skin, boots, tires, gives, and just about anything. The thorns are super strong. They don't snap easily. Now imagine what they can do to livestock. Whether they step on them, rub against them, or any other interaction.

If you need to remove them, what do you do?
Just mow or mulch it?
Due to the dense woody stalks and large thorns, it's not the first choice. Image one of those thorns being thrown out of a bush hog and it's coming at you like a missile. Or imagine how many flat tires you would get trying to drive through it. Yes, you can get specialized equipment to mow or mulch it. It will grow back twice as strong. Each time you cut it, it spreads and grows back stronger.

You must remove the entire root system with it. These have a deep root system. Or you can cut them down and apply a liquid chemical that will kill the roots.

Can you burn it?
Yes and no. It is such a hard wood that is difficult to ignite on its own. It needs to be very well seasoned before you burn it. It is best to have softer woods create a coal bed in order to ignite the honey locust.

Who likes to clean their fence lines?
Who likes a clean fence line?

I imagine those are 2 very opposite answers!
You aren't alone. No one enjoys cleaning them.

Here's what happens when you don't clean them. The grass turns to tree sapplings.
The tree saplings turn into trees.
The trees eat your fence and posts.
Then it's a whole deal.

This barb wire fence was ready to lay down from all the trees that were cut down and the roots pushing it over on the ground. Then the cows would get out and it becomes a whole mess.

Let's straighten it back up and fix some broken sections for now. It's almost time to replace all the wires on this one.
