Abacus builders Abacus Builders & General Contractors is a Ground Up Development Specialist firm. We specialize in multi-family home building and general contracting.

Mark Little started the company in 2006 and grew it through his strong community roots, building a solid reputation one customer at a time. The Abacus Builders office opened at 190 Old Colony Ave in 2014 allowing us to get to know our customers better through in-person meetings, ensuring a superior service that is exactly what each customer wants. Our mission at Abacus Builders is to provide exceptional construction services to our customers. To continue expanding our company, giving our employee’s the opportunity to advance and grow. And, to remain a community-minded company and an asset to our local area through our continued work with neighborhood groups and organizations such as ONEin3, Harvest of Hope and the Notre Dame Education Center.

Not every project gives you a lot of room to work with.

In Boston, tight lots and narrow spaces are often part of the job, which means every square foot has to be intentional.

Here, circulation, access, privacy, drainage, structure, and material choices all had to work together within a limited footprint.

That’s where thoughtful design really matters.

Because good construction isn’t just about creating more space. Sometimes it’s about making the space you already have work a whole lot harder.

We’re currently hiring for two field positions:
• Lead Carpenter

Both roles are based on our projects around Boston. We’re looking for people who know the work, take pride in doing it right, and can keep a job moving.

That’s some of our crew outside the shop on Old Colony Ave. We’ve been building in Boston for more than 20 years, and we’re looking for a few good people to join us.

A lot of the Abacus crew’s work happens long before a project starts looking finished.

These are the stages that usually disappear behind walls, floors, and finishes — but they’re just as important as what you see at the end.

From prep work to the heavier construction phases, the crew is there making sure the foundation is right before the next layer goes in.

It’s not always the most glamorous part of the job, but it’s where a lot of the real work happens.

What was once a three-unit building is now two spacious duplex homes in South Boston.

At 760 East Broadway, this upper-level living space makes the most of its height and natural light, with vaulted ceilings, skylights, herringbone floors, and a kitchen that opens directly into the rest of the home.

Matte black cabinetry, quartz surfaces, and warm brass details give the kitchen a clean, modern feel while still keeping the space warm and inviting.

A major transformation from what was here before.

Clue 1: This Caribbean country shares an island with another nation.

Clue 2: It’s known for white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and plenty of sunshine.

Clue 3: Baseball is a pretty big deal here. ⚾

Take the climb with us.

This GoPro walkthrough takes you through 210 Lincoln Street and up to one of the best parts of the project: a private roof deck with 360° views across Boston.

The connection between the living space and rooftop was a major part of the design, including a custom floating staircase that leads up to a fully finished headhouse and expansive outdoor space built for entertaining, relaxing, and taking in the skyline.

The headhouse adds even more function with central AC and a fireplace, making the rooftop feel like an extension of the home rather than just an outdoor deck.

Behind the doors of this South End brownstone: four floors of renovation.

Abacus was brought in to completely rework this historic home while preserving the details that make South End architecture so distinctive.

The project included a new chef’s kitchen, 3.5 renovated bathrooms, new HVAC, refinished flooring, custom architectural details, and a roof deck finished with Ipe tiles and a handrail system approved by the Boston Historic Commission.

Inside, original moldings were carefully replicated, while curved walls, hidden doors and modern finishes gave the home an entirely new feel.

The goal wasn’t to erase what was here. It was to make the house work beautifully for the way people live now while keeping the character that belonged to it.

Sometimes the job starts before we get there.

Abacus was brought in to take over this three-level deck and stair project after the original build wasn’t progressing the way the HOA had hoped.

We started with what was there, worked through the existing conditions, and got the project moving in the right direction.

BayState Iron Works handled the new steel posts, while the Abacus demo and carpentry teams completed the rest of the deck system.

The best part? A finished project, a very happy HOA, and genuinely one of the nicest groups of people we’ve had the opportunity to work with.

Sometimes good construction is about building from the ground up. Sometimes it’s about stepping in, solving the problems, and getting the job across the finish line.
