Our clients approached us with a entirely new challenge for LDa – to design a new home utilizing the principles and geometry of Vastu Shastra, a traditional Hindu system of architecture – while also incorporating elements of traditional New England architecture and modern design.

Vastu Shastra is centuries old and complex in its interpretations and implementations, but the basic themes are core elements of central space, peripheral zones, direction with respect to sunlight, and relative functions of the spaces. This is most often represented around divided grids with designated areas for household uses.

This home was designed for a family of three, and based on a nine-square grid. In warmer climates the center “square” would be an open courtyard, but was reinterpreted here to be a living room with a large central skylight system to bring the outdoors in.

An indoor pool that is as functional as it is fun 🏊

This indoor pool was designed to provide our clients with a private pool space that was appropriate for staying active and entertaining. Featuring sliding and folding glass doors that, when open, provide a 30-foot-wide opening to the courtyard beyond, allowing for a seamless transition between the interior building and exterior courtyard space. With a linear skylight stretching across approximately 80% of the length of the pool house, there is natural lighting to help keep the space illuminated so that, even in the evening hours, it still casts indirect lighting over the entire pool.

Closets that offer both form and function ⚖️

When trying to strike the balance between the need for storage and the goal of achieving a certain look, we look for solutions that marry form with function. In building closet space into this bedroom with taller ceilings, our team wanted to take advantage of the full height of the
ceiling to allow for maximum storage and create a cohesive look. The choice to incorporate a pull-down closet system allows our clients to comfortably store
their belongings, while still maintaining ease of accessibility.

Earlier this year, LDa Principals Erin & Kim had the opportunity to participate in the BSA Kindergarten program; Kim and Erin visited local kindergarten classrooms to help teach the children about how their communities came to be what they are now through urban planning, architecture, and interior design. After lengthy discussions about what they love in their neighborhoods, what they would like to see, and what they think makes a neighborhood feel like a community - the kids were off to the races, designing their very own communities that aligned with the important elements that they had identified.

Each kindergarten classroom then had the opportunity to display their “community” at city hall. The results of this program are extraordinary special - giving a lens into what the youngest generation understands to be important markers of a thriving community.

“Piloted during the 2017-2018 school year, the BSA’s Kindergarten curriculum provides a two-part interactive lesson to participating classrooms, introducing students to architecture and planning through simple shapes and building types. The curriculum fits within a 10-week unit on construction and the larger year-long Focus on K-2 curriculum developed by BPS and utilized by CPS. Through a guided presentation and hands-on activity, students learn about the various places that make up their city before a hands-on design activity bridging individual student designs with a discussion on neighborhood planning.” - BSA
