A centuries-old Italian finishing technique, taking shape inside one of our Beacon Hill projects.

We caught up with Maurizio, owner of Pietra Viva, as his team applied Venetian plaster throughout this corridor, including the sweeping arch that continues from wall to ceiling. Using an imported Italian, limestone-based material incorporating Carrara marble stone, the finish is built up by hand to create a subtle, seamless surface that complements the architecture of the home.

The arch presented the biggest challenge, requiring three craftsmen to work together continuously under carefully positioned lighting to keep the texture and finish consistent from beginning to end. Once the plaster has cured, Pietra Viva will return for the final step: applying natural Savon de Marseille with sponges and rags, helping the surface harden and develop its character over time.

These may be some of the hardest-working spaces in the home, but that did not mean they had to feel purely utilitarian. As part of this massive whole-home renovation, the mudroom and side entry were designed to create a polished transition between the outdoors and the main living spaces while providing plenty of everyday storage.

Custom millwork by Herrick & White brings both spaces together, with inset Shaker cabinetry shop-painted in Sherwin-Williams Gauntlet Gray (SW 7019), natural maple interiors, soft-close hardware, and a rift white oak bench stained to coordinate with the cabinetry and finishes found elsewhere in the home. The mudroom combines open storage for coats, bags, and shoes with concealed cabinetry, while additional built-ins in the side entry keep the arrival space clean and organized.

Underfoot, the geometric stone flooring continues through both spaces and into the adjacent hall, giving these functional rooms a much more architectural presence. Paired with the warm gray millwork, crisp white trim, and natural wood accents, it creates an entry sequence that feels every bit as considered as the rooms beyond.

In a neighborhood defined by architectural consistency, the front door is often where individuality begins.

Join Grace, one of our Project Managers, for a walk through Beacon Hill as she explores the colors, materials, finishes, hardware, and details that give the neighborhood’s front doors so much character. From traditional painted and stained wood to bold colors and beautifully detailed entries, there is plenty of room for personality while still respecting the historic streetscape.

And what about those deep, glass-like high-gloss doors that have become so recognizable around the Hill? While that mirror-like finish is more of a modern Beacon Hill tradition than a historically original one, high-gloss finishes are not prohibited. The Beacon Hill Architectural Commission has approved high-gloss door finishes on properties throughout the district, even though more traditional finishes are generally closer to the neighborhood’s historic character. As with any exterior color or finish change in the historic district, the specific work is still subject to Commission review and approval.

It is one of the things that makes walking Beacon Hill so interesting. The architecture may follow a common language, but no two front doors have to tell exactly the same story.

A kitchen designed to feel timeless and detailed.

As part of this full gut renovation, significant reframing and structural work allowed us to raise the kitchen ceiling while creating a single, continuous level without steps on the second floor above. Combined with additional windows, the new volume brings a greater sense of openness and allows natural light to pour into the space.

Custom rift-sawn white oak millwork and wide-plank clear white oak flooring are paired with Mont Blanc quartzite across the counters and range wall. At the center, a La Cornue range sits beneath a custom blackened steel hood detailed with antique brass bands and rivets.

Rich wood, expressive stone, aged metal, natural light, and precise millwork come together in a kitchen that feels open and airy while still grounded in warmth.

When Lala Curio founder Laura Cheung Wolf traveled from Hong Kong to the East Coast, we had the opportunity to join interior designer Natalie King for an introduction to her extraordinary collection of wallpapers, furnishings, and decorative arts.

Rooted in generations of artistic tradition, Lala Curio’s work brings heritage techniques into the present through vibrant color, intricate botanical motifs, and an imaginative point of view. It was an inspiring day spent exploring materials that could find a place within our current collaboration with Natalie or spark ideas for projects still to come. We are grateful to have experienced the collection firsthand and to add such a distinctive resource to our design vocabulary.

At the center of this historic Beacon Hill townhouse, this custom shower was designed to feel both architectural and serene. Vermont Maple Danby marble wraps the rear wall, floor, ceiling, curb, and surround, creating a continuous composition that highlights the stone’s natural movement.

A three-sided, floor-to-ceiling glass enclosure allows natural light to flow throughout the bathroom while creating a fully enclosed steam shower. Nickel fixtures from the Waterworks Henry collection coordinate with the glass hardware, while Benjamin Moore Herbal Escape adds a soft, calming backdrop to the space.

What started as a traditional wood-paneled room was transformed into a layered and refined space through new hardwood flooring, fresh paint, updated lighting, and carefully selected furnishings.

The existing woodwork, including the walls, windows, mantle, and shelving, was fully sanded, primed, patched, caulked, and finished with two coats of Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant paint. The result is a dramatic library that feels both classic and completely reimagined, with the original architectural details now taking on a new depth and sheen.

Three timeless design tips from interior designer Sacha Jacq, who brings over 25 years of experience to each project:

1. Start with a monochrome palette. If you’re unsure where to begin, keep the foundation simple and bring in texture, color, and personality through pillows, upholstery, artwork, or a statement powder room.

2. Prioritize light. Whether it’s floor-to-ceiling windows, chandeliers, wall sconces, or under-cabinet lighting, the right lighting can completely transform a space. It can be bold and architectural or soft and subtle, but it should always add warmth and interest.

3. Invest in artwork, even if that means starting small. Make something yourself, buy a print, or slowly save for a piece by an artist or photographer you love. The best spaces feel personal, layered, and collected over time.
