Since its founding in 1978, the firm has served two principal client groups: public entities that operate mass transit facilities and non-profit organizations that develop affordable housing. In addition to public transit, our transportation work has diversified to include tunnels, airports, intermodal stations, parking garages and maintenance facilities. Our housing portfolio has expanded beyond affordable housing and covers community planning, mixed-use and mixed-income developments, elderly and market rate housing. In addition to housing and transportation, DHK Architects designs public facilities for state and municipal clients, and community facilities for private clients. Much of this work has involved the preservation of historic buildings that contribute to the lasting civic value of our cities.

DHK began as the Boston branch of a New York firm in 1978 and incorporated as a locally owned company in 1985. From its inception, DHK was associated with major transportation infrastructure projects including the historic preservation and reconstruction of South Station and the new Southwest Corridor Orange Line in Boston. DHKโs dedication to affordable housing began with work in Bostonโs minority neighborhoods and with local housing authorities in Massachusetts cities and towns. Over the years, DHK has prepared master plans and designed new and rehabilitated housing for communities in New England, New York, the Midwest and Puerto Rico.
