Wreaths 🍃
Since ancient times, wreaths have symbolized the wheel of life and a circle of hope.
Each person according to season or phase of life, will find themselves at the top of the wheel ⏰(12:00, spring/birth), making the rounds (3:00 summer/ renewal), at the bottom (6:00 autumn/decline) or struggling back toward the top (9:00 winter/death/regeneration).
Taking a walk, gathering botanicals from the winter landscape, and making a wreath, all become part of a meditation on the season. As we create and appreciate this labor of love, a wreath becomes a reminder that no matter where we are in the seasons and cycles of our lives, we will always continue to cycle through the good, the bad, the ups, and downs, youth and aging, life and death.
A linear path merely takes us from beginning to end, but the wheel of life symbolized in a wreath, reminds us that we are always most vital, engaged and alive when we accept our current phase, create forward movement, and celebrate the season at hand.
Perhaps this year, instead of arguing about politics, or getting trapped in a frantic rush to buy gifts and decorations, take a walk in nature with family and friends. Make your own wreaths from the special things you gather and renew this ancient holiday tradition designed to engage us in the spirit of the season.

Today is considered the
Official opening of the door
That takes us into 2024

Interesting how modern
Humans created a cultural
Mindset that doesn’t
Exist in Nature

A mindset that drives our
Behaviors and beliefs even
In the face of Nature’s
Stark realities of this time

It’s as if January 1st is the
Cannon shot off every year
Flags flying, announcements
Blaring and more information
Sharing about The “New” year
With all manner of suggestive
Ads for creating new and better
Lives in the coming time

I long for the days when humans
Followed the cycles of the year,
The seasonal prompts that led
Us through the ancient ways of
Being and knowing, living and doing

Now I’m expected to embrace
Societal busyness in the most
Silent time of our year, a time
For rest and contemplation and
Feeling into both seasonal times
Yet to come and what comes
Next for each of us

A time of contemplation
Not a time of action

A time of stillness
Not a time of active being

A time for sleep and rest
To dream our personal
“New” year into existence
One gentle movement
At a time

If Only…

Our reality is that we live
In a world that is fast moving
And in need of constant
Shift and change such that,
Rather than the ability to
Embrace the stillness and
Sit with what is, we are
Always searching for the
Next big thing

We are always searching for
The New that propels us into
The gifts of tomorrow and
Tomorrow and tomorrow
Rather than focusing on today
And the way of slow living

So wrap yourself with the
Fires of remembering,
Wrap yourself in the
Slow ways of our Ancestors
And their gifts of knowing
How to be in this time

Wrap yourself in the warmth
Of the flames of memory
As your mind and hands
Remember this potent time
Of simply being with what is

No focus on what is to be
Or wondering… worrying…
About all the tomorrows

Just a cup of tea and a warm
Sweet treat, a book and a cat
Curled round you, as your mind
Stills and your hands offer prayers
Of sweet rememberings, along
With the gentle, loving knowing
That ALL comes in Her time

About the book:

Earth Restorer's Guide to Permaculture is an informative and inspiring guide that shares the methods and mindsets needed for our future planetary health. It teachers us:
● The roles of permaculture principles, ethics and design philosophy
● Ecological literacy for the current and future states of water, soil and climate
● Global insights in how to design for the (present and future) impacts of climate change
● The role of urban settings, and the path to eco-cities and neighbourhoods
● The increasing importance of marine permaculture and social permaculture
● How to move from ‘me’ to ‘we’ as we collectively restore and regenerate our Earth

The book shows us that by working in our local patch we can help restore our global ecosystems. It is especially useful for planners and community designers and is a valuable primary text for teachers of Permaculture Design Courses.

Those who register will get a code to receive 10% off purchase of the book in North America.

“This is a vital book for our times of climate catastrophe, biodiversity loss, species extinction, and food and water scarcity…it shines the light on another path.”
- Dr Vandana Shiva, Indian scholar, author and environmental activist.
