Last week we wrapped up 30 Days to 30 with our anniversary celebration at Southern in Boulder. We had a great night with the people who made the last thirty years possible.

To our team, past and present: the projects we shared this month, from off grid cabins to Coors Field to Diego Garcia, all came from your work. The installs, designs, service calls, and coordination behind every one of them belong to you.

To our friends and families: your support keeps our crews going, including on the early mornings and late nights.

To our vendors and partners: we rely on you every day, and many of you have worked with us for years. We appreciate you.

To our customers: you trusted us with your homes and businesses, some of you for decades. That trust means a lot to us.

A special thank you and Rexel for sponsoring the celebration.

Here’s to the next thirty years.

Day 30/30: Thirty years!

Thirty years ago Independent Power Systems started in Montana with one man, one truck and a pile of inverters. Today we are 85 team-members in Boulder and Bozeman doing solar, batteries, heat pumps and electrical for homes and businesses.

The last 29 posts were about projects. But today, we focus on our most important asset: our team past and present. The portfolio of work we have done in thirty years is impressive, but none of it was done by a company. It was done by people who climbed the roof, crawled the attic, designed the systems, answered the phone, and coordinated complex timelines.

This success is built on technical expertise, exhausting physical work, and relentless team coordination. Our core values - Positive, Evolving, Customer-Centric, and Excellence - are on display every day throughout this company.

Some of our team have been doing it for a long time. Rick and Lance both started in 2008, eighteen years ago. Ryan has fourteen. Logan twelve. Kenny and Dustin ten each. A few hundred others have worn the various logos for a season or a decade, and every one of them has made an impact on our communities and our business.

To every customer who handed us a roof, a basement or a mechanical room: thank you for trusting us with your home and business. To Tony: thank you for building something worth carrying. To the crew, past and present, in both states: thanks for all of your effort and dedication to impact.

Tonight we celebrate!

Day 29/30: Wiring houses on an assembly line

builds homes in a factory on Arapahoe in Boulder. The program is BoulderMOD, a partnership with the City of Boulder and the Boulder Valley School District. The houses go together indoors as modules, with high school students working alongside the crew, then get trucked to the site and set on a foundation.

Since early 2025, Independent Power electricians have been wiring the modules on the factory floor. Our residential electrical team also has the pleasure of teaching electrical fundamentals to high school students interested in the trades. The first homes are already on foundations in the Ponderosa neighborhood in North Boulder. The factory has built 16 so far and is aiming for 50 a year as they ramp up.

In May, our office crew spent a day there as volunteers, hanging drywall and running the saw instead of pulling wire. Nobody was allowed near the electrical.

Thanks to the Habitat and BoulderMOD team for the opportunity to work on this impactful community project!

Day 28/30: The whole-home system

More and more of our customers aren't asking for just solar anymore. They want solar, a battery, and a heat pump working together, and sometimes a heat pump water heater and an EV charger too. When you take gas out of the house, the electric side must be designed for it.

That's why our solar and battery technical design specialists work side by side with our heat pump technical design specialists. We start with a full look at how the home uses energy today and how it will once heating and hot water go electric. Then we forecast the solar production and size each component to fit: enough panels to cover the new load, enough battery to carry essentials through an outage, and a heat pump matched to the house and our winters.

The result is one system, designed as one system, by one team. It's the kind of work we've been building toward for 30 years.

Day 27/30: Up on the mountain

One of our favorite places to see solar is Eldora, up above Nederland. We designed and installed rooftop solar on two of the resort's buildings, the Nordic Center and the new Ski and Ride Lodge that opened for the 2024-25 season. Together, they are 52.5 kW (125 panels) and expected to generate about 64,000 kWh in their first year.

It was a fun one to build. The lodge was going up while we worked, so our crew built around the construction schedule, in real alpine conditions. We've also done solar work in Big Sky, Montana, including homes and outbuildings at the Yellowstone Club, using black panels set flush so they disappear into the roofline.

Two of the conference rooms in our Boulder office are named Eldora and Big Sky. Every meeting in there is a reminder of where this work has taken us.

Day 26/30: Solar on the pub

In the spring of 2010, a retired engineer in north Boulder called Independent Power about solar for his house. He mentioned his son ran a pub on Pearl Street and might want some too.

The son was Kevin Daly, and the pub was Mountain Sun The house went up first: 24 SunPower panels running by June. Two weeks before that our crew was already on the pub's roof with a tape measure, stepping around the skylights and poking through the attic to see what the rafters could hold. The electrical service was in a shed out back, behind the kegs.

The design took the summer. In October 2010 we set 44 Sharp panels on a low-tilt rack between the skylights, just under 10 kW, with a monitor inside so you could watch the roof make electricity while you waited for a table. Nine years later, we installed a solar system on Kevin's house.

Mountain Sun is still pouring great beers and serving terrific food (the Seelye family goes for lunch every Sunday after church) and, as far as we know, the solar is still working. Which is fitting, because we are hosting our 30th Anniversary Celebration this week at , Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery's sister pub on South Broadway!!

Day 25/30: Heat pumps come to Montana

Two years after Colorado, we brought HVAC to Bozeman. In late 2025, Independent Power started designing and installing heat pump systems in Montana.

It wasn't long ago that it was thought that heat pumps would not work in Montana, but the technology caught up and put that idea to bed. Cold climate units can now be efficient well into negative temperatures. On February 5, 2026 our Montana crew finished our first heat pump installation in the state. We continue to build the team and heat pump awareness in Central Montana.

Thirty years after Tony started wiring off-grid cabins outside Lincoln, we are efficiently heating houses in Bozeman with electricity. Same idea, different equipment.

Day 24/30: The building that was melting cars

UCAR's Richard Anthes Building in Boulder has a curved south face with anti-reflective glass. Nice to look at. The problem is that a concave wall of glass is a mirror, and this one focused the afternoon sun onto the parking lot hard enough to warp plastic trim on the cars parked out front. Several times the intensity of direct sunlight, at the apex of the curve, every clear day.

Lumos Solar designed the fix: a solar awning. 180 frameless panels with clear backsheets, bolted to a custom steel lattice that follows the curve of the building. The panels break up the reflection, shade the offices without blacking out the windows, and make 45 kW on the side.

Independent Power installed it. Caissons in July, steel in August, a Saturday shutdown in August to tie into the building's switchgear, panels in September, nine Aurora inverters on the wall, and completed in October and did the electrical, and we are thankful that both are still on our team!

Twelve years later the awning is still the first thing you see on the Foothills campus, and the cars are fine.

Day 23/30: Earthship

In 2023, a family building an Earthship above Clear Creek Canyon called Independent Power. If you have not seen one: rammed-earth tire walls, a greenhouse along the whole south face, glass bottles set into the adobe, and a roof pitched at 45 degrees to catch winter sun. Michael Reynolds has been building them in Taos since the seventies. This one is in Jefferson County, and it needed power. Our team wired and did the finishing work on all of the electrical in the home and then installed solar and batteries.

The house did not have an electrical plan when we showed up, and the owners decided partway through that they did not want gas at all, so the system grew. What went in: 16 REC panels on the steel roof above the greenhouse glass, a Sol-Ark 15K hybrid inverter and 20 kWh of Humless lithium batteries, mounted on the adobe next to a bottle-glass sun. The house is tied to Xcel but carries itself when the grid drops.

The install was December and the crew worked off a boom lift parked on the hillside below the house because there was no other way to reach a 45 degree roof with glass under it. Special thanks to the team for standing in a lift basket in the snow.

Thirty years in, there are still houses we have never seen before!

30 Days to 30 🎉

Day 22/30: Public Radio Resiliency

has been on the air in Boulder since 1978. In the 2013 flood it was one of the places people turned for information when the power and the roads were gone, and it is part of the Emergency Alert System. So when the station bought a former office building on 14th Street to build the Gnu Community Media and Cultural Center, staying on the air with the grid down was part of the brief.

Independent Power designed and installed the resiliency system. On the roof: 66 Qcells panels, 28 kW, on a ballasted rack. In the battery room: two Sol-Ark 60K three-phase hybrid inverters and 120 kWh of Sol-Ark battery, with the station's natural gas standby generator tied in behind a bypass transfer switch. When Xcel goes down the batteries pick up the load in milliseconds, the studios and servers never see it, and the generator carries the long outages. On a normal day the whole thing just makes electricity and cuts the power bill.

The design started as a single-phase residential-style system and grew into 480-volt three-phase once the building's real loads were on the table. The project passed final inspection in December 2025. Sol-Ark liked it enough to write it up as a case study.

KGNU opened the doors on May 22, 2026 with 700 people, a ribbon and Amy Goodman. Independent Power had a table out front and gave battery-room tours all afternoon. Community radio, powered by the community.
