In regenerative agriculture, we talk a lot about covering the soil—and winter gives us one of the best covers of all: snow.

🌨️ 1. Snow insulates soil and protects life beneath. It moderates temperature swings, shielding the entire soil food web from extreme cold. The underground ecosystem stays active and healthy through winter.

💧 2. Snow provides slow-release water
Unlike heavy rain, melting snow seeps in gradually. This recharges soil moisture gently, without compaction or runoff.

🧪 3. Snow captures nitrogen from the air. Snowflakes capture small amounts of atmospheric nitrogen. As the snow melts, this nutrient is delivered directly to the soil for spring growth.

🌿 4. Snow prevents erosion and preserves soil structure. A cover of snow protects bare ground from wind and freeze-thaw damage, keeping soil aggregates together and the soil where it belongs.

SUSTAINABLE YARD FEATURE: Take a stroll through this gorgeous NATIVE + ADAPTED Landscape in the foothills of Boulder CO - designed for a family that values reusing existing natives, introducing adapted plants for bioregional diversity, and making use of what's available for an affordable beautiful yardscape!
A custom outdoor grill was designed and built for entertaining - native stone was used and the outdoor counter top matches their interior as well.
We loved working with these locals and enjoyed integrating their creative ideas throughout the process.

Ready To Get your Fall Clean Up Done? What to really clean up in the garden now vs What to leave for spring? HERE ARE 3 EASY TIPS for "going native"...
1) Put Excess Leaves In Garden Areas
Leaves are good for the garden and feed the soil as they break down. Add a layer under existing mulch as natural compost.
2) Leave Some Stalks and Foliage
Dead plant material is a wonderful place for beneficial insects to hibernate during the winter.
3) Don’t Deadhead All Of The Flowers
Flowers like echinacea, rudbeckia, and helianthus (sunflowers) and more have seed heads that feed the birds, squirrels, and other animals through the winter months.
