Budget season is an opportunity to look back at how your property performed and decide where next year’s landscape dollars will have the greatest impact.

A few questions to consider:

📊 Maintenance scope: Did this year’s service plan match what the property actually needed, or were certain issues repeatedly handled outside the contract?

🌳 Enhancements: Which projects would improve appearance, address ongoing problems, or protect the value of the property?

❄️ Snow and ice: Does the current coverage provide the right level of service for your site, its usage, and your risk tolerance?

🔧 Deferred work: Are aging plant material, drainage problems, irrigation repairs, or declining trees becoming more expensive to postpone?

The most effective budgets account for both routine care and the larger needs that can be anticipated now. Reviewing priorities with your landscape partner early can help you plan more accurately and reduce surprises in the year ahead.

Are your property’s trees ready for winter?

Fall is an ideal time to identify tree concerns before snow, ice, and strong winds place additional stress on vulnerable limbs and weakened trees. Addressing potential risks now can help protect buildings, vehicles, walkways, and the people who use your property.

During a pre-winter tree risk check, look for:

• Dead, cracked, or hanging branches
• Weak branch unions or split trunks
• Cavities, decay, or fungal growth
• Trees leaning toward buildings, roads, or walkways
• Exposed, damaged, or lifting roots
• Branches interfering with lighting, signage, or structures

Not every visible issue means a tree needs to be removed. A professional arbor assessment can help determine whether pruning, monitoring, treatment, or removal is the right next step.

Taking action before winter weather arrives can reduce risk, prevent avoidable damage, and support the long-term health of your property’s trees.

Nearly 1,000 native trees and shrubs needed a new home after this summer’s heat wave. Thanks to a community-wide effort, they are now taking root across Loudoun County.

Abernethy & Spencer Greenhouse and Garden Center donated the plants, while Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and the Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance (LIRA) helped connect them with local communities, including our client, Ashburn Village HOA.

At Ashburn Village, the new trees and shrubs are helping extend an existing wooded buffer and create more habitat for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Our Complete Landscaping Service team was proud to help get them planted.

Winter landscape damage often begins before the first snowfall.

De-icing salts used on sidewalks, roads, and parking lots can wash into nearby soil, where sodium may disrupt soil structure and make it harder for turf and plants to take up water. The effects often become visible later as thinning turf, bare patches, or declining plants along pavement edges.

Applying granular gypsum to vulnerable areas in the fall can help prepare the soil before de-icing season begins. The calcium in gypsum helps displace accumulated sodium, supporting better drainage and healthier soil conditions.

For property managers, fall is the time to identify high-risk areas near:

• Sidewalks and building entrances
• Parking lots and drive lanes
• Roadways and snow-storage locations
• Slopes that receive salty runoff

Gypsum is not a complete barrier against de-icing material damage, but when used as part of a proactive winter landscape plan, it can help reduce sodium buildup and protect the long-term health of your property.

If your property isn't under contract yet, now is the time to lock in coverage before the first storm hits. Once accumulation starts, availability tightens fast... and scrambling for a crew in the middle of a weather event rarely ends well.

Our snow teams are being scheduled now for the season ahead. Priority routes, 24/7 response, and the equipment to handle whatever the DMV winter throws at us.

Don't wait until the forecast changes.

Dry season is here, and irrigation schedules need to change with it.

What worked in September doesn't work in November. Less rain, lower humidity, and cooler nights mean turf and plant material need water delivered differently—less frequently, but deeper when it runs.

Worth checking now:
Is your controller still on the wet season schedule?
Are zones running long enough to reach the root zone, or just wetting the surface?
Are heads covering evenly, or are dry spots starting to show?

Properties that adjust early stay ahead of the stress. The ones that wait usually end up reacting to damage that's already visible.

Dry season isn't forgiving. Your irrigation schedule shouldn't be guessing.

Leaf season in the DMV isn't an event. It's a campaign.

Depending on the property, leaves drop steadily for six to eight weeks, and the difference between properties that stay presentable and properties that disappear under leaf litter comes down to one thing: scheduled, recurring removal instead of waiting for the trees to finish.

Wet leaf mats smother turf, clog drains, and turn walkways slick. A biweekly rotation keeps all of it in check.

The trees are about to start. Make sure your property has a plan that matches their schedule.

The best spring landscapes are being planted right now.

Tulips, daffodils, alliums, crocuses: every bulb that goes into the ground this fall becomes effortless color in March and April, exactly when properties are desperate for signs of life.

Bulbs are also one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost enhancements available. Plant once in October, and entrances and focal beds announce spring before anything else on the property wakes up.
