Summer is winding down, and your landscape has a story to tell.

What thrived, what struggled, and what didn't survive: it's all visible right now, before fall cleanup and cooler weather smooth over the evidence.

A quick end-of-summer walkthrough answers useful questions. Which beds need plant replacements this fall? Where did turf hold up and where did it fail? Which areas need drainage or shade solutions before next year?

The properties that assess in August plan the smartest fall work. Everything recovers better when you know what actually happened.

Happy National Dog Day to the real inspectors of every landscape we maintain. 🐕

Nobody evaluates turf quality like a dog at full sprint. Nobody appreciates a shade tree more. And nobody notices a new planting bed faster (iykyk).

For HOA and multifamily communities, pet-friendly outdoor spaces have become a genuine amenity: durable turf, shaded walking paths, and dedicated dog areas that keep the rest of the landscape looking its best. Today, we salute the residents with the highest standards of all.

World Water Week is a good moment to look at how properties handle the water they can't control.

Summer downpours, roof runoff, parking lot sheets of stormwater: it all has to go somewhere. Landscapes designed with that in mind, using rain gardens, bioswales, native plantings, and healthy soil, turn runoff from a liability into a resource.

In the DMV, where stormwater regulations keep tightening, this is quickly becoming standard practice for well-managed commercial properties, not just a nice-to-have.

Everyone talks about the plants. Nobody talks about the pavement.

Hardscapes carry a huge share of a property's first impression, and they need care too:

🧱 Paver joints losing sand invite weeds and shifting
💦 Algae and grime buildup make walkways slick and tired-looking
🔧 Small cracks and settling get worse every freeze-thaw cycle

Late summer is a smart time for hardscape attention. Cleaning, joint sand replenishment, and minor repairs now mean surfaces head into winter sealed and stable instead of vulnerable.

It's 90 degrees out, and we're already thinking about mums. 🍂

Fall color programs get planned in August for the same reason spring ones get planned in January: availability. The best selections of mums, pansies, ornamental kale, and fall accents go to the properties that order early.

Selecting colors, quantities, and placement now means smooth installs and a polished look right when the season turns. Reach out to your Area or Project Manager to start planning your fall rotation.

Your turf isn't the only thing feeling parched in August.

Trees and shrubs suffer quietly in extended heat, and by the time they show visible stress, damage is already done. The tricky part: frequent shallow watering doesn't help them. It trains roots to stay near the surface, where heat does the most harm.

What actually works is deep, infrequent watering that soaks the root zone. Slow trickle, longer duration, less often. Especially critical for anything planted within the last two years.

August is when this matters most. Newly planted trees that get through this month usually make it.

PSA for property managers: fall aeration and overseeding schedules are filling up right now.

September and early October are the prime window for cool-season turf work in the DMV, and everyone wants the same few weeks. Properties that book in August get the timing that produces results. Properties that wait get whatever slots are left.

If your turf took a beating this summer, this is the call to make before the calendar makes it for you.

Tonight, communities across the DMV are gathering for National Night Out.

Block parties, cookouts, and neighbors meeting neighbors, most of it happening in the outdoor spaces we care for all year. Courtyards, lawns, and common areas exist for exactly this.

To every community hosting an event tonight: enjoy it. This is what well-designed outdoor space is for. 🌿

The plants get all the attention. But look around any great outdoor space and notice what else is working.

Benches placed where there's actually shade. Trash receptacles that keep gathering areas clean. Bike racks near the right entrances. Pergolas and shade structures that turn an empty lawn into a destination.

Site amenities are what turn a landscape people look at into a space people use. And late summer, when outdoor areas are at peak use, is the best time to notice what's missing, what's worn out, and what residents keep asking for.

Today is National Tree Day, and it's worth looking up.

Mature trees are quietly doing more work than anything else on a commercial property. Shading buildings and parking lots. Cooling common areas by noticeable degrees. Slowing stormwater. Framing entrances and defining spaces in a way nothing else can.

They're also the one landscape asset that can't be replaced quickly. A tree lost to neglect takes decades to truly replace.

Worth protecting. Worth investing in. Worth celebrating today. 🌳
