With the upcoming forecast for extreme cold mixed with strong winds, there are a few measures homeowners can take to prepare both furnaces and plumbing.

PLUMBING
- Turn your heat up as much as you can tolerate
- Allow faucet to drip, running both hot and cold water lines (a slight stream is enough)
- Keep all interior and cabinet doors open to allow heat to flow throughout your home
- Seal any cracks/ holes in foundation, sub floors, and under cabinets
- Apply heat tape to water lines
- Add extra insulation to pipes that are not insulated

HEATING
- Check thermostat. If batteries are required, ensure they are new.
- Check air filter. Replace if needed.
- Check exhaust pipe &/or fresh air intake to ensure no restriction of air flow.
- Have a couple alternate heat sources, such as electric heaters, in case your furnace does stop working.
- If your furnace has not been serviced recently, we highly recommend scheduling an appointment to prevent any unforeseen issues that may occur. We have a couple openings available before Wednesday.

It is important to know that as the temperature drops and wind picks up, it is normal for furnaces to run more frequently than usual. Due to the extreme temperatures, your furnace may not be able to keep up with the temperature you have set on your thermostat. Do not be alarmed if this happens.

If you discover that your pipes are frozen, or you are without heat, please call immediately. With the extreme weather, the temperature in your home will decrease rapidly, causing more issues.
