🍂🌿 Thinking about making some changes to your landscape? Fall may be the perfect time.

When most people think about planting, spring usually comes to mind. But here in Kentucky, fall is actually an excellent time to establish many trees and shrubs. Cooler temperatures reduce stress on newly planted material, while the soil can remain warm enough for roots to continue developing. That gives plants an opportunity to begin establishing before the demands of the next hot summer.

Whether you're looking to add a little color, create more privacy, replace overgrown landscaping, or completely refresh your outdoor space, good results start with choosing the right plants for the right locations.

🌿 LANDSCAPE SPOTLIGHT: Right Plant, Right Place 🌿

Have you ever planted something that looked perfect at first… only to find out a few years later that it had completely outgrown the space?

Creating a beautiful landscape involves more than choosing plants you love. Each plant has its own needs, and where it is planted can have a big impact on how well it performs over time.

Before a plant ever goes into the ground, it’s important to think ahead. How much sunlight will it receive? What will it look like at its mature size? Will the soil drain properly? Does it have enough room to grow without interfering with the house, walkways, utilities, or neighboring plants?

Matching plants to the conditions of the site can help reduce stress and create a healthier, longer-lasting landscape.

🌱 Good landscaping isn't just about how it looks today — it's about planning for what it will become tomorrow.

🌱 LANDSCAPE SPOTLIGHT: HOW HIGH SHOULD YOU MOW? ✂️

When it comes to mowing your lawn, shorter isn't necessarily better!

Grass needs enough leaf surface to produce the energy that supports healthy growth. Cutting turf too low can restrict root development and make the lawn more vulnerable to stresses such as drought, traffic, w**ds, insects, and disease.

One of the easiest rules to remember is the one-third rule: try not to remove more than about one-third of the grass blade during a single mowing. If the lawn gets away from you, it's better to gradually bring it back to the desired height over multiple mowings rather than cutting it dramatically shorter all at once. 🌿

And don't forget the mower itself! A sharp blade creates a cleaner cut, while a dull blade tears the grass and can leave behind those familiar frayed, brown tips.

What about those clippings? In most cases, leave them! When you're mowing regularly and the clippings aren't forming heavy clumps, they break down quickly and return nutrients to the lawn—and normal grass clippings do not cause thatch buildup.

Sometimes one of the best things you can do for your lawn isn't mowing it more—it's simply mowing it right. 💚

☀️💧 IS WATERING YOUR LAWN BECOMING ANOTHER ITEM ON THE TO-DO LIST?

During hot, dry summer weather, keeping your lawn properly watered can take some effort—especially when you're relying on hoses and portable sprinklers.

A professionally installed irrigation system makes watering much more convenient and consistent. Properly designed systems can deliver water throughout the landscape on a schedule, helping avoid the missed areas and inconsistent watering that can happen when sprinklers have to be moved around manually. 🌱

And if you already have an irrigation system, keeping it working properly matters too. Damaged heads, leaks, poor coverage, and incorrect settings can all affect how efficiently your system uses water.

That's where Custom Cut Lawn & Mulch can help!

💧 New irrigation system installation
🔧 Irrigation maintenance
🛠️ System and sprinkler repairs

Spend less time dragging hoses around the yard and more time enjoying the lawn you've worked hard to have.

☀️ LANDSCAPE SPOTLIGHT: SUMMER LAWN STRESS 🌱

Have you looked across your lawn lately and wondered, “What happened? It looked great a few weeks ago!”

Summer can be tough on turf. Many of the grasses commonly grown in our area are cool-season grasses, which naturally perform best during the cooler weather of spring and fall. When high temperatures and limited rainfall arrive, those grasses can begin showing signs of stress.

And here's something homeowners don't always realize: a lawn turning brown doesn't automatically mean the grass is dead. Some cool-season turf can become dormant during hot, dry periods as a survival response and regain color when adequate moisture and cooler temperatures return.

During stressful summer conditions, good lawn care can actually mean doing less, not more. Watering established turf deeply and less frequently encourages deeper rooting, while mowing higher—and even postponing mowing when grass is severely drought-stressed—can help reduce additional stress and damage.

So, if your lawn isn't looking quite as green and perfect as it did this spring, don't panic. Your grass may simply be reacting to summer. ☀️🌱

Sometimes understanding what your lawn is telling you is just as important as knowing what to do about it.

Healthy lawns aren't perfect every season—they're managed for the season they're in.

🍂 When was the last time your landscape beds got a fresh layer of mulch?

Over time, mulch fades, washes away, and breaks down naturally. While that's part of its job, it also means it eventually needs to be refreshed to keep your landscape looking its best and performing the way it should.

A fresh layer of quality mulch can:
🌿 Help conserve soil moisture
🌿 Reduce w**d growth
🌿 Protect plant roots from extreme temperatures
🌿 Improve soil as organic mulch naturally decomposes
🌿 Instantly give your home a clean, well-maintained appearance

Whether you're looking to boost curb appeal or give your plants a healthier environment to thrive, fresh mulch is one of the best investments you can make in your landscape.

At Custom Cut Lawn & Mulch, we take pride in clean bed preparation, quality materials, and professional installation that leaves your property looking its absolute best.

🌿 Landscape Spotlight: Mulch 🌿

Have you ever wondered why fresh mulch is recommended almost every year?

Mulch is one of the hardest-working parts of a landscape. While it certainly gives flower beds a clean, finished appearance, its biggest benefits happen beneath the surface.

A properly applied 2–3 inch layer of organic mulch helps:
🌱 Reduce moisture loss by slowing evaporation.
🌱 Suppress many w**ds by limiting the sunlight they need to germinate.
🌱 Moderate soil temperatures, helping protect plant roots during hot summers and colder weather.
🌱 Reduce soil erosion from heavy rains.
🌱 Break down over time, adding valuable organic matter back into the soil.

One thing to remember: more isn't always better. Applying mulch too deeply can trap excessive moisture around stems and trunks, potentially leading to disease or root problems. A moderate layer is the healthiest choice for most landscape plants.

Fresh mulch isn't just about appearance—it's an investment in healthier plants and a landscape that's easier to maintain throughout the year.
