We are increasing our services to include recreational vehicles. We have over the years done several different types of builds in high-end recreational vehicles, including lots of custom cabinet work. Today we’re working on a customer who has scheduled us for a stop during her full-time RVing life. Some custom cabinet doors, hinges, and retrofit modifications of her van to make her life on the road easier.

This is interesting, and it’s very difficult work. There are no specific size, corners, or straight lines in most vehicles. This makes it a challenge and very rewarding!

Sometimes when designers lay out a home they add rooms for the simple reason of increasing space or being able to label that room as a "special place" that will entice a buyer, but when actually built.. the room is awkward, isolated, or does not help the flow of the living space. Such was the case in this new condominium.

There was a large living room and family room next to it, but the sight line was blocked. A ( rather) simple opening up of the wall, some reframing, and then trimming out to match the original casing and colors was the key to making this home feel incredibly open instead of partitioned.

A small project? Yes? Huge difference and immediate change? You bet.

A trip into the attic was made to determine how the framing was laid out in relation to the load that this wall was carrying, and it was game on. We had some hope that the builder might have framed this opening out originally and then covered it at the original owners instruction but no; some new framing and relocating of goodies in the wall were required. No problem.

We did the finishing of the new wood in our shop and then installed and touched up at the home. From beginning to end, we completed framing, wiring changes, trim, and paint with only 9 hours on the jobsite.

Homework pays off.

In the 70's and 80's, big tubs in the master bath were in . . . and they were a great concept! Lots of water to soak in with a glass of wine and some Howard Jones on the CD player...

Well, over time that becomes less convenient. The hot water heater cant fill the whole tub with hot water, and it gets cold really fast, and it takes up a lot of room.

A big shower makes more sense.

Back when this regal lady was built in the late 1800's, the third floor was an unused space. In the 80's or so it was drywalled and carpeted but the new owners had a vision: Since the river is only a few block away, the dream was to be able to gain access to the very top of the house to enjoy the views.
..But there was no easy way to get up there save a leaky wooden hatch and no railings, making the 50 foot drop a bit dicey.

So how about a wooden spiral stairway that leads to a custom built ship's ladder, through a glass roof door and then onto an area with strong railings and the view.

You bet. Very cool. So here we go. Huge props to Mike and Steve for bringing the design to life.

Rarely is a new project so transformational as when an original room that is 50 plus years old is completely changed to a new space with the latest in materials, conveniences, and open space.

It's not always an older home that needs a change. This house was apparently finished by the builder who did not think that the kitchen was important, but that an extra door and window looking at the neighbor's house was. So... we changed that.

Adding modern conveniences to an old home is a challenge. We often come across a remodel that was done that looks just like that ... a remodel. The trick to is choose layout, trim, fixtures and colors to make the new room look as old as the house. It can be more difficult, but if you take the time to mill the right trim, choose the right tile, and then install it with care then the result is, " what did you guys do?" That's the trick.

This tiny bath was original to the house, but very small. A wall mount sink and a stool were all that was installed. The owners wanted to add a shower, but how?

In the 70's, Bowling Green gained a large subdivision of tract homes that came with all of the joys of that era: Vinyl floors, cheap cabinets, Avocado appliances, and plenty of surface mounted lights and low grade add ons. It also seemed a requirement that there be a peninsula in the small kitchen and eating area, and that the space be bisected by hanging cabinets. That, plus small windows to make the area as dark as possible. This kitchen was completely gutted and rewired with new lighting, solid hardwood floors on the entire lower level ( over a concrete slab, which is extra fun!) new appliances, windows, and a Vorst custom kitchen with three step crown. It went from 70's tired to classic elegance. Here are the results.....

Some dreams take a long time to come true. In this case, 26 years is the magic number. The main house is over 100 years old and the current kitchen is an addition, with what used to be a porch now enclosed for extra space. The project here is manifold, including a completely new structure for the kitchen, complete with a very nice covered porch under the same roof line. The old kitchen will be completely gutted and rebuilt into a formal dining room with raised panel walls, built in sideboards, and dry bar. The house will be all new soffits, rakes, windows and siding. The kitchen will be a chef's dream with huge refrigeration, custom cabinets, stone counters, and of course lots of light. So... what will we find under the skin of this structure? More trees perhaps? Let's find out.
