For a guy who hails from eastern North Dakota, it’s not surprising that Gus Johnson isn’t one to pat himself on the back. Years of harsh winters on the plains are bound to make you humble. But growing up in such an unforgiving environment also makes you hardy and resilient.

Gus is an Operator on one of our toughest and muddiest projects in Big Sky. His favorite machine is the excavator — reliable, efficient, and versatile. After more than six years with Williams Civil Construction, he's proven to be a man of few words. But he hasn't had to say much. His actions on the jobsite speak for themselves. Andy Johnson, Foreman, has worked with Gus long enough to learn the obvious: "Everyone wants Gus on their team. He’s willing to do anything that’s asked of him, and he never complains.”

For Gus, the best part of the job is simple: starting a new and untouched site, and changing it. His advice for newcomers to the trade is also simple, but the best advice often is: Work hard, pay attention, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Craft beer is coming to Three Forks, with help from this crew.

Pictured here are Matt Degenhardt, Paul Lamere, Hunter Rammerman, Ryan McCarthy, and Hayley Winkel — who stand in front of shiny new fermenters at the upcoming Bridger Brewing location along Highway 287. The new location will have a taproom, a restaurant, and a production brewery for canning beer. For our team, this has resulted in nearly 33,000 square feet of ambitious plumbing work.

The schedule and workflow of this project has been challenging — ordering specialty brewing equipment from Germany amid worldwide shipping issues is no simple task — but the crew has kept in good spirits. The management team, led by Paul Smart, has been positive and supportive. The crew, which includes Paul Lamere, Hunter Rammerman and Juan Carillo, has been swift and resilient. And all of our team's collaborators — from the top-notch trades people to the brew masters to the lighthearted owners — have helped make this a satisfying project.

Cheers to that! 🍻

Our series highlights the many awesome people at this company who have worked for Williams for twenty years or more. Today we're spotlighting Kevin Scott.

Kevin is our Executive Vice President, and has climbed the Williams ranks across more than two decades. Looking back at his 25 years here, a rush of memories come to mind:

"I have many fond memories over the years, beginning with being employee number 65 when I was hired. I remember starting up the first plumbing and heating system in a house that I did under Larry Rak and Tim’s heating guidance; getting the engineer's sign-off on the first pump station I ever did in Cascade Meadows, and giving my parents a tour of it; getting called into Ken’s office from the field to help with a bid — a Civil bid, nonetheless. (And Larry Rak and I won $100 off Ken and Kurt on it.) I remember sitting in Bill Martel’s office with Ken and Don Stueck; Williams Plumbing and Heating winning the first RFP project for a school district in Montana; becoming the Commercial and Industrial Division Manager when I was 30 years old. I remember the plumbing division winning an award from the Montana Contractor’s Association for a project with Dick Anderson Construction. And I'll remember achieving VP/GM before I was 40."

Deb Smith is somewhat of an icon within the Harvey's division, with her strawberry blonde hair and larger than life smile. After more than twenty years managing all aspects of the main office, she has experienced — and adapted to — just about everything in the plumbing business.

"I still remember my first year at Harvey’s. I was the only woman working at Harvey’s at the time and Sam Harvey came in with a Louisville Slugger bat for me. He told me that was my Man Adjuster! Ha! I still have it in my office today!"

As the company grew, so did her list of responsibilities — eventually landing her the title of Office Manager. Out of all her regular duties, helping designers and homeowners shop for plumbing fixtures is the role she loves most. And she’s good at it, too: her expert knowledge often exceeds that of the wholesaler.

Outside the office, Deb and her husband collect antique decoys and fishing lures, which fill three big display cases in their home. She is also a proud mom, grandma, and great-grandma. Her daughter and grand-daughter have even followed in her footsteps: they both work for local plumbing supply companies.

Devan Bessette is a husband, dad to two, hunter, fisherman, wood worker and, according to his supervisors, one heck of an operator.

His work in the dirt has laid the foundation for important infrastructure on many projects throughout Montana. But if you ask Devan what the most important thing he’s built over the past seven years with Williams Civil Construction, he’ll say friendships: “When you work with a company for so long, you kind of become family.”

To motivate his own team, Devan, a Foreman, focuses on building trust and a sense of community by working beside them. “I think if you’re willing to get down and do the dirty stuff with them, it keeps people wanting to stick around. And the more experience we have, the better we can be.”

It’s one of many lessons Devan learned from company founder Ken Williams, who imparted this wisdom about teamwork: “Ken once said that one guy isn’t going to know how to do it all, but a group as a whole can figure it out.”

Spinning axes, flying wood chips, a few bullseyes, and a whole lot of fun — that sums up the Williams + Harvey's team building day last Friday. It was a total blast for the best service team in the valley. 🎯

spotlight: Lorraine Lewis is a Project Manager who has worked with Williams for 25 years. Reflecting on her time with the company, Lorraine had this to share:

"I've stayed with Williams because of the "employees come first" culture. And I can’t think of anything I would like to do more than what I do now. My best advice for career success: just do your best and have a good work ethic. With that, everything seems to fall into place. Communication is key as well."

spotlight: LaKeta Raaen. LaKeta, our Payroll Clerk, has worked with Williams for 22 years. This is why she's stayed with the company for over two decades:

"With all of my life changes — children growing up, children getting married, becoming a grandmother, health, marriage to my Jeff — Williams has accommodated me. It helps that I like my job, too. At this point, I couldn’t be happier doing payroll."

spotlight: Lance Wagner.

Lance is a Superintendent, and has been with the company for 27 years. Across nearly three decades at Williams, one memory stands out:

"Ken and Shelley Williams stood up at my wedding in Las Vegas. It became quite entertaining. At one point, our cab couldn’t pull out of the parking lot, so Ken got out and stopped traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard. They are my family. Ken always had my back, and I had his. I’ve seen many people leave and then come back because Williams is the place to be. That’s why I’ve never left."
