Pricing and payments.

This came up again today (as all of my posts are based on experiences that I have).

When I give you a price for a job, I give you the very best price I can offer the first time. Once a job is complete. I do collect at the time of service, unfortunately, I do not do a cash discount. All jobs are processed through the company And are recorded as such.

I accept cash, personal checks, business checks, or Venmo. Unfortunately, still no credit cards.

I am always happy to explain the invoice you’ve been given and answer any questions that you might have.

Please never say this to any contractor!

This happened again today, and there are fewer giant red flags for every single contractor I know. A customer was describing a job for me and kept referring to their job as simple and easy. Stop doing that. Because if it were simple and easy, you would not be calling a professional to do it.

WHY WOULD YOU OVER PAY FOR SERVICE??

When you call a company (any company)  and they dispatch a technician from their big shop, into a fleet of vehicles, and the tech shows up in a freshly pressed uniform. It’s all very professional and very impressive. But please remember YOU are paying for all of that. You pay for the big shop, the office manager, the fleet of trucks, all the uniforms, all of the advertising. You will pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars extra for a job to support their business choices.

I would prefer you spend your money with a smaller local company that gives fair pricing, honest answers, and reliable service,

Please don’t say these words.

When a customer calls or text and says this is a simple job, an easy job, a quick little job,
Or the very worst is “I’d do it myself but I don’t have the tools”. every single contractor I know is immediately turned off to the idea of doing that job.

The majority of times we find this is said in an effort to imply that this should be cheap and quick. But the contractor hears that what you’re really doing is discounting our knowledge and our value. If the job was in fact, simple, or quick then the homeowner would do the job with the assistance of YouTube.

When those words are spoken two things immediately happen ,
1. The price goes up 2. The availability of the contractor to do the job goes way down.

Instead just briefly describe what needs to be fixed and ask if and when the contractor is available to take a look and provide a price. It will work out better for everyone.

Let’s talk about canceling an appointment:

 I understand that cancellations happen. Due to emergencies or unforeseen circumstances. I very rarely, but occasionally have to cancel an appointment as well. I do my very best to ensure I make contact with the client with as much notice as possible and offer alternative dates and times that best fit their schedule.

What I do not care for is a casual Last Minute appointment cancellation simply due to poor scheduling. If you call me or text me late the night before and I’m supposed to be at your house as the first job the next day, that leaves me with an open time spot that was dedicated to you. That is very difficult for me to fill. If you simply don’t show up at a job and I am waiting at your house or if you call me literally a few minutes before the appointment is supposed to start it really does not sit well with me. It says that you don’t value my time or my schedule. As always, I try to be transparent and honest with everybody and I can tell you when these things Happen it will be more difficult to get me to re-schedule.

I try to respect your time, please do the same and respect mine as well.

Let’s not waste my time or yours:

As I am typing this, I am driving away from a job that a customer has been waiting a few days for me to get to their house to address an issue they are having. When I arrived, I found a poorly plowed driveway up a hill and my van is awful in the snow. I knew before even attempting to get into the driveway that I would not be able to get up the driveway. I have decided that my policy is if I cannot get my vehicle to within a reasonable distance of your house I am not showing up. It is not worth me sliding down your driveway or potentially damaging my van to attempt to get into a shoveled driveway. So before you call me or anybody for that matter to hopefully fix something at your house please make sure your driveway is actually accessible.
