BUG FACT FRIDAYS
In the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, the Vulture Bee (genus Trigona) is a unique insect that has swapped flower meadows for a diet of rotting meat. These stingless bees use specialized, tooth-like mandibles to slice flesh from animal carcasses, storing it to bring back to the hive. To safely digest a meal that would make other creatures deathly ill, they have a highly acidic gut filled with the exact same bacteria found in actual vultures and hyenas. Despite their macabre lifestyle, they are non-aggressive to humans and even produce a sweet, edible honey from fruit sugars processed separately from their meat chambers.

BUG FACT FRIDAYS
In Southern Africa, the Baboon Spider (subfamily Harpactirinae) is a fascinating type of tarantula named for the thick, hairy pads on its feet that resemble a baboon's paws. These heavy-bodied spiders are strictly ground-dwellers, building silk-lined burrows under rocks or logs where they lie in wait to ambush beetles, crickets, and other crawling prey. While they are highly defensive and possess a painful bite with strong venom, they are generally secretive creatures that prefer a quiet life in the savanna—only lashing out if they feel cornered.

BUG FACT SATURDAY

The Jerusalem Cricket (Stenopelmatus) is the insect world’s version of a subterranean, sand-colored alien. Neither a true cricket nor from Jerusalem, this hefty, flightless giant is easily recognized by its smooth, oversized head that looks uncannily like a tiny, bald human face. A master of underground percussion, it lacks wings to chirp and instead drums its heavy abdomen against the soil, sending rhythmic vibrations through the earth to call out for mates. Despite their fierce looks and powerful jaws, these "potato bugs" are actually gentle bulldozers that spend their days quietly aerating the soil.

Have a great Saturday!

BUG FACT FRIDAYS

The Buffalo Treehopper (Stictocephala bubalus) is the insect world’s version of a tiny, emerald bison. Named for its bizarre, angular thorax that mimics a buffalo's hump, this bug uses its sharp profile to blend seamlessly into green stems. A master of architectural precision, the female uses a saw-like organ to slice into twigs, tucking her eggs safely inside the bark for the winter. Despite their bulky, armored appearance, they are high-speed leapers that can vanish in the blink of an eye.

It’s May in Southwest Missouri, and while we’re all enjoying the beautiful weather, four specific pests are trying to move into your neck of the woods:

🐜 Ants: The scouts are out! One tiny crumb in the kitchen can bring the whole colony.

🕷️ Spiders: If you see webs, it means there’s a "bug buffet" nearby. Spiders follow the food!

🪵 Termites: These guys are the "silent destroyers." They work under the radar until the damage is done. (Ask us about our Sentricon System—it's the best defense there is!)

📍 Ticks: The most dangerous of the bunch. They hide in tall grass and leaf litter, waiting for a ride on you and your pets.

Since 1976, Mr. Bug Killer, Inc. has been the trusted name for safe, family-friendly pest control. Let’s keep your home a sanctuary and those pests outdoors where they belong!

BUG FACT FRIDAYS

The Dogbane Beetle is often described as a piece of "living jewelry" due to its stunning, iridescent exoskeleton that shimmers with shades of metallic green, copper, and gold. Found across North America, these beetles are famous for their specialized diet; they feed almost exclusively on the dogbane plant, which contains toxic chemicals. Instead of being harmed, the beetle sequesters these toxins within its own body, using its brilliant, shiny exterior as a "keep away" warning to hungry birds and predators. While their flashy colors might make them look exotic, they are gentle garden residents that spend their summer days basking on leaves and playing a quiet, colorful role in the local ecosystem.
