Prevent Your Water Pipes from Freezing!

● Let a small amount of water drip from your faucets to minimize the risk of the water freezing and the pipe bursting from the pressure of the expanding ice.

● Seal all air leaks that may let an icy blast reach your pipes.

● Water pipes located next to an outside wall are often subjected to sub-freezing temperatures. Any plumbing located in a garage or any other unheated building is susceptible to low temperatures. Any exposed pipes should be wrapped or insulated. There are other devices such as heat tape which can be used to keep pipes from freezing.

● Don't forget outside faucets. Turn off valves to outside faucets, drain any water remaining in the faucets and disconnect any hoses. If there are no valves to outside faucets, they may be protected by insulating them and then placing a plastic bag over them to protect the insulation.

● Pipes in cabinets could be located against an outside wall. Even if these pipes have been insulated, leave the cabinet doors open to allow the heat in the room to help keep them from freezing.

● If your house has a crawl space located under it, close all air vents located in the foundation wall. This will prevent the pipes in the crawl space from being exposed to the cold air and other water using devices, to give your pipes extra protection from freezing.

Thawing a Frozen Pipe...
Be careful! Gentle heat from a light bulb, hairdryer on warm setting or heat tape is good. If the pipe is already cracked from freezing, as the water thaws, it may begin to spray out risking danger of electrocution if it sprays the appliance you are using for thawing. Do not use a torch or other open flame.

Find Your Main Water Cut-off Valve...
Look for this now! Imagine the panic, if water was pouring through the house from a broken pipe. Locate the main water cut-off valve, mark it, and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is. Most main water cut-off valves are located on the wall where the water enters the house or near the washing machine or water heater. If you have a basement or crawl space the shut-off valve is probably where the water line comes through the concrete foundation.

With all the Christmas parties, family time, and rushing to get gifts, the last thing you need is a plumbing emergency during the holidays. We can’t control everything in life, but when it comes to your plumbing there are some steps you can take ahead of time to avoid the extra expense of calling a plumber. End unwanted stress and get back to making memories this Christmas by following these simple preventative tips.

1.Check for Drips and Leaks
A constant leaky kitchen or bath faucet can hurt your wallet if left without repair. Try to get ahead of these before guests arrive.

2. Protect your Pipes
Your pipes get cold, too. When they get too cold, the water inside them could possibly freeze and expand leading to water damage and broken plumbing. Avoid burst pipes by insulating exposed pipes in garages or crawlspace.

3. Maintain Indoor Temperature
Another easy way to prevent your pipes from freezing is to keep the heat in the house at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Whether you’ll be gone for a few hours or a few days, pipes can freeze quickly.

4. Prevent Clogs
A sink or tub that won’t drain can easily put a damper on the holiday season. To prevent these kinds of clogs, it’s important to make sure that you and your guests follow a few simple rules. If you’re cooking this holiday, it’s important to remember never to use the drain for disposal. Stringy vegetables, peels, grease, and oils are all known to cause clogs.

5. Winterize Your Home
If you’re heading out of town for Christmas for a week or two, it might be best to make sure there’s no water left in your pipes. Without water, your pipes won’t be able to freeze. Lastly, shut off the water leading to all the toilets, faucets, and the hose bibbs.

6. Septic Tank Service
If it’s been 2 to 3 years since your last septic pump-out, it’s time you get one scheduled. The last thing you want is for backups or slow draining in your home while visitors are enjoying the full swing of the holidays.

Sometimes no matter how much you prepare, disaster still strikes. Roberts Plumbing is here to help you this holiday season. Give us a call at 770-967-1119!

Thanksgiving Plumbing Tips!

With Thanksgiving upon us, many of us have started to make preparations and getting ready for the upcoming holiday. But did you know that for residential plumbers, Thanksgiving is the single busiest day of the year? In fact, plumbing problems spike by 50 percent the day after Thanksgiving — and it’s no doubt why. Just think about it — you’ll be delighting in turkey and sweet potatoes, and soon your wayward and greasy dishes will be clogging your drains.

Here are Roberts Plumbing’s top Plumbing Tips for Thanksgiving so you can stay sane and enjoy family time to the fullest:

1. Don’t Throw Leftovers Down the Drain!
Sure, it’s easier to just throw leftovers down the drain, but this will almost certainly clog it. Instead, throw leftovers in the trash or compost pile so there won’t be any clogging. If you choose to throw them down the drain, feed waste gradually to prevent overloading. Also, make sure to never pour fats or cooking oils in the drain as they will solidify in pipes. Use paper towels to wipe grease from pots, then throw them in the trash.

2. Make Sure the Disposal Is Running!
Another common mistake that can clog your drain is not turning the disposal on before putting food into it. To avoid plumbing issues due to the garbage disposal, make sure to turn on the faucet to allow the drain to fill with water before you put any food into it. Keep the water running for a short time after turning it off so the waste won’t clog the drain.

3. Use a Sink Strainer!
The best way to prevent clogging your drain is using a sink strainer to prevent any food from going down it. This will keep the water running while making sure that no leftovers will pass through it. The waste gathered in the strainer can be thrown in the trash or compost pile once you’re done washing the dishes. With a little bit of precaution, even the most challenging plumbing problems can be easily avoided.

4. Wait at Least 10 Minutes Between Showers!
Many of us have family guests for the holidays. Ask them to wait at least 10 minutes between showers to allow for your water heater to recycle and provide adequate hot water for everyone.

FALL PLUMBING TIPS!!!

Remove, Drain and Store Garden Hoses
You want your garden hose to last another year, so it’s important that you properly stow it away. When the hose has been disconnected, drain the water and place it in an area of your home that will not reach freezing temperatures. Water that is left over inside the hose can freeze and expand causing the hose to break!

Turn Off Your Hose Bibb
One of the most important tasks that you will need to do this season is to properly turn off your hose bibb and inside water supply line. If you noticed that your hose bibb was leaking this summer, we advise that you invest in a frost-proof hose bibb before the first frost occurs. If a hose bibb isn’t properly turned off, water can freeze in the supply line, which can cause pipes to burst. To avoid any issues, give Roberts Plumbing a call today to complete any hose bibb installation or repair!

Insulate Exterior Hose Bibbs
Install Outside Foam Faucet Covers on all of your exterior hose bibbs. These covers will help protect your outdoor faucets from freezing in cold, windy weather conditions.

Insulate Your Pipes
Unheated areas, such as crawl spaces and garages, typically do not have insulation around pipes, and leaving them exposed makes them prone to freezing. To combat this problem, use insulation, heat tape, or thermostat-controlled heat cables to keep them warm. This will prevent pipes from bursting and causing an expensive repair.

Get Your Water Heater Ready for the Workload
Winter temperatures often mean that you are going to use your water heater more than any other time during the year. Because the water heater works overtime, you want to make sure it is ready for the workload. If you have not serviced it since last year, it is time to get a tune-up or at least a flush to ensure premium performance. You should also set the temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to get optimal temperatures more quickly.

In addition, you may want to evaluate your need for a new water heater, as most only last 8 to 12 years. Let us recommend a replacement water heater for your home. Call us for a quote today at 770-967-1119!

Dear God, as we remember the tragic events of September 11, we come before You with heavy hearts. We honor those who lost their lives, those who were injured, and the families who continue to feel the pain of their absence. Please grant them peace and healing. May we never forget the courage of first responders and the spirit of unity that arose in the face of adversity. Help us to carry forward the lessons learned, fostering love, compassion, and understanding among one another. We thank You for Your everlasting presence in our lives. Amen.

4th of July Plumbing Hints and Tips!

The 4th of July, Independence Day is right around the corner! Now is the time for barbecues, family gatherings, fireworks, and other holiday festivities! That is why the expert plumbers at Roberts Plumbing have put together the following 4th of July plumbing hints and tips for a successful, safe, and fun holiday!

1. Get Your Drains Cleaned
One of the most overlooked aspects of home plumbing systems is the drains. Many people go their entire lives without ever hiring a professional plumbing company to come out and clean out their drains professionally, opting, instead, to use over-the-counter chemical drain cleaners. Don’t be “that person.”

Before you have any guests over this 4th of July, contact us here at Roberts Plumbing and have us come out and perform a thorough drain cleaning for you. Remember, no one wants to deal with a clogged drain or backed up toilet during their 4th of July festivities! Having us out to clean your drains beforehand can go a long way towards preventing any plumbing emergencies during your celebrations.

2. Have Your Bathroom Plumbing Inspected and Repaired
Before you have guests over this 4th of July, the expert plumbers here at Roberts Plumbing we recommend that you have your bathroom plumbing fixtures inspected. You’d be surprised just how often we get called out on July 5th to help unclog someone’s toilet after they had a big party! To help prevent any issues, just have your bathroom plumbing system inspected (and repaired, if necessary) before the big day arrives. Contact us today to schedule a bathroom plumbing inspection.

3. Check All Your Home Plumbing Appliances for Issues
Another wise thing to do before having a party for the 4th of July is to have your entire home plumbing system inspected. An inspection can let you know of any existing problems before you exacerbate them during your festivities. It also provides you with the information needed to make any necessary repairs before your guests arrive.

Instead of worrying yourself about your plumbing system for the 4th of July, why not just contact the expert plumbers at Roberts Plumbing? We would be more than happy to do your pre-party plumbing preparation for you. So, don’t hesitate!

Contact us at callrobertplumbing.com or at 770-967-1119 and schedule a plumbing inspection and/or drain cleaning today! Remember, the 4th of July is only a week away, so act now!
