âď¸HEAT RISK ISNâT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE!
Your Heat Program May Be the Same. Your Workforce Isnât. Two people working side-by-side in the same conditions may not respond to heat the same way.
Age, acclimatization, physical condition, sleep, hydration, illness, and even certain medications can influence how someone handles working in the heat.
One emerging conversation involves GLP-1 medications, such as those commonly used for diabetes and weight management. These medications may affect appetite, thirst, hydration, and how someone responds while working in hot conditions. Watch for more on GLP-1 medications and working in the heat in the recent ASCCSAFE.
A few simple reminders:
â
Don't assume everyone experiences heat the same way.
â
Encourage workers to hydrate and fuel throughout the day, even when they may not feel hungry or thirsty.
â
Make it easy for workers to take a break and speak up early when something doesn't feel right.
â
Workers with questions about medications and working in the heat should talk with their healthcare provider.
â
Supervisors don't need to know someone's medical history to recognize when a worker isn't acting like themselves.
A good heat program sets the baseline. Paying attention to the individual helps close the gaps.
