How long should a stain job ACTUALLY last before needing maintenance? 🤔
This beautiful cedar shingle home in Briarcliff Manor is a perfect real life example.
Back in 2018, the client came to us with a problem. Just 2 years earlier, the siding had been stained with an oil-based product and was already showing significant black mildew and premature wear. The homeowners were frustrated and understandably hesitant when we introduced them to
Instead of pushing the entire project, we agreed to do just the FRONT side of the home first (the side that takes the absolute worst beating from direct sun exposure and weather) as a real-world test.
One year later, after seeing how incredibly well it held up, the homeowners moved forward with the remaining three sides of the home in 2019.
Fast forward to 2025… we returned to apply a maintenance coat to that original front side SEVEN YEARS after the initial application, with no maintenance done in between.
And now in 2026, we’re back maintaining the remaining three sides roughly 7 years later. This is exactly why we educate homeowners so heavily on proper product selection the first go around and long-term maintenance.
So to answer the question… a properly applied, properly maintained stain system absolutely can perform beautifully for 6-7+ years, even on surface is exposed to intense sun and weather, when the right product and maintenance plan are used!
