P & LE Ohio River Bridge

P & LE Ohio River Bridge The P&LE Ohio River Bridge spans the river between the towns of Bridgewater and Monaca in Beaver Co., Pa.

It was built in May 1910 and today is still in use by CSX.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the first train to ever cross the P&LE Ohio River Bridge on May 11, 1910...And the bridge is still going strong!

Back in high school, my friends and I used to walk across this bridge, and a couple times we had to hide out on the pier to avoid a train. I also know someone who once jumped (GULP!) from one of the piers into the river. He survived, but not without some major bruising! What stories do you have of the P&LE Ohio R. Bridge?

“The Vice President’s Special”, engine No. 23, made the first official trip over the bridge on May 11, 1910. Colonel James Schoonmaker, VP and GM of P&LE Railroad were aboard for the ceremonial crossing. The first passenger train to cross was train No. 5 on May 14, 1910.

Upon completion of the bridge, the extreme points were found to be within 1/8-in. of the figured position, both vertically and horizontally.

All work on the P&LE bridge was done with no more than 100 men, and the bridge was completed in just 223 working days.

Most of the bridge is held together by a series of large steel pins, the largest of which was 16-in. in diameter, 8-ft. 9-in. long and weighed approximately 3 tons.
