✓ Batch size matched to what the crew can place?
✓ Gauge rake set?
✓ Broadcast staged and wet-edge plan clear?
✓ Topcoat on site and recoat window understood?

More build doesn't mean less prep.

A slurry/broadcast floor goes down thicker than a typical thin-film coating, but the slab underneath still has to be clean, sound and properly profiled.

Thermal-Chem's general slurry/broadcast system calls for an ICRI Concrete Surface Profile of CSP 2-3.

And porous or uneven concrete can change how much material you use and increase the risk of outgassing.

Check the slab before the first batch gets mixed.

Broadcast technique can show up in the finished floor.

After the slurry has had time to level, aggregate needs to be applied while the surface is still wet.

For a more uniform broadcast, throw the aggregate upward and allow it to fall onto the surface instead of driving it straight into the resin.

Working a large area?

Maintain the wet edge so adjoining placements tie together cleanly.

And decide what texture you're trying to achieve before installation starts. Aggregate size, broadcast amount, sanding and topcoat all affect the final profile.

How thick is the slurry actually going down? Don't guess.

One of the keys to a consistent slurry/broadcast floor is controlling thickness during installation.

Use the screed rake or depth-gauge setting, keep checking it, and monitor material usage as the crew moves across the floor.

If you're running heavy or light, you want to know during the pour, not after the system cures.

As an example, Thermal-Chem's general installation guidance describes an approximately 1/8-inch slurry finishing at roughly 3/16 after broadcast, depending on the base coat and conditions.

Control the build as you go.

The room says 70°F. But what does the concrete say?

On a slurry/broadcast epoxy flooring job, ambient temperature is only part of the picture.

Contractors should also check:
✓ Slab temperature
✓ Material temperature
✓ Air temperature
✓ Dew point

Temperature affects viscosity, working time, coverage, and how the slurry spreads and levels.

And a slab-on-grade floor can be considerably cooler than the room around it.

As a general practice for resinous flooring, keeping the substrate at least 5°F above the measured dew point during application and initial cure helps reduce the risk of condensation.

Not all sand performs the same way in an epoxy slurry.

Aggregate particle size, gradation, and shape affect how the mix flows and self-levels.

That's why the aggregate mixed into the slurry and the aggregate broadcast onto the slurry serve different purposes.

As an example, in Thermal-Chem's general slurry/broadcast system:

➡ TC #4 Slurry Sand goes into the resin to create the slurry.

➡ TC #6 Broadcast Sand goes onto the wet surface to help create the final build and texture.

Change the aggregate, and you can change how the mix behaves.

That's why slurry aggregate shouldn't be treated as generic filler.
