Your house has had a nice, easy summer.

Okay… it survived an Oklahoma summer. So maybe “easy” is generous. 😂

But fall is actually a great time to pay attention to the little things around your home before colder weather arrives.

🍂 Open and close your windows. Are any sticking or difficult to lock?
🍂 Check exterior caulking around windows and doors for cracking or gaps.
🍂 Look at weatherstripping around exterior doors.
🍂 Stand near closed windows and doors on a windy day and check for noticeable drafts.
🍂 Make sure exterior doors close and latch properly.
🍂 Walk around the house and look for damaged trim, deteriorating wood or places water could potentially work its way in.

You don't have to be a contractor to notice when something has changed.
Sometimes your house gives you plenty of warning before a little problem becomes a much bigger one.

Sometimes you don’t need to change everything to make a house feel completely different. 👀

This recent Tulsa window install is a pretty good example.

The dark frame against the lighter exterior adds contrast, gives the front of the home a more updated look, and—most importantly—brings a whole lot more view into the room.

Because windows aren’t just something you look through.

They’re part of the architecture.

And when the size, style and installation are right, one window can make a BIG difference.

Some projects call for a window.

Some call for what is essentially an entire wall of glass. 😏

These oversized arched window and door systems are exactly the kind of projects we love at JDan Home Improvement—the ones that require a little more planning, a little more precision, and definitely more than grabbing something “standard” off the shelf.

From the framing to the installation, details matter when you’re working at this scale. Because when your windows are one of the biggest architectural features of the home, “close enough” isn’t close enough.

This one is still a work in progress, but just wait until everything around these is finished.

Ever wonder why you can’t just grab a sledgehammer and start knocking out walls because HGTV made it look fun? 😂

Some walls are load-bearing, meaning they’re helping transfer the weight of the structure above them down through the house. Others are simply dividing one room from another.

And when you start changing layouts, adding oversized windows or doors, or opening up a room, that load still has to go somewhere. That’s where proper headers, beams, posts and framing come into play.

Basically: the pretty open-concept room comes later. First comes the math, structure and a whole lot of lumber.

That’s the part of home improvement most people never see—but it’s also the part you really want done right.

25 years ago, our country changed forever.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger, the ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage, and the families who have carried the weight of that day for 25 years.

As a small American business built on hard work, family, and community, we’re especially grateful for the men and women who serve, protect, build, and care for the communities we call home.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember the heartbreak. We still remember the courage. And we still remember how, in the days that followed, Americans stood together.
