Lynn Gaffney RA, LEED AP, is a nationally recognized architect (Dwell, Metropolitan Home, New York Times) whose firm, Lynn Gaffney Architect (lga) founded in 1997, has produced a range of work diverse in scale, program, spatial qualities and aesthetic styles. Throughout her career Lynn has been fortunate to find clients with an inquisitive and

collaborative spirit. Lynn builds a team specific to each assignment including the client, colleague, craftsperson, carpenter, contractor. She keeps focus on shared goals while integrating each individual’s creative strengths. Together the team challenges the status quo and transforms the project’s objectives (as well as obstacles) into uniquely tailored solutions. Lynn pursues and considers all prospective projects on the basis of achieving balance - in life (work/ live), in site locale (urban/rural), and in client type (residential/ commercial/ institutional). In addition she has consistently supported various non-profits with pro-bono work and is always intrigued to hear about these opportunities. Lynn lives and works in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn with her husband Bill and young daughter Genevieve. She hopes to engage people’s innate interest in architecture with various posts on her firm's project as well as the subject at large.

Very honored to be featured in The New York Times for my Esopus project with fabulous clients Natale and Sebastien Adgnot. Link in my bio to Tim McKeough's insightful article and Jane Beiles' beautiful photos, including this view of the entry walk.

Tim tells the story of Natale and Sebastien's discovery of the original kit house, aptly described by Natale as having a Twin Peaks vibe, and then how we transformed it. Don't miss how Sebastien was welcomed to homeownership.

Jane's photos show the design nicely, including the entry addition (genkan), the main open living/kitchen space, the dining/sitting room (prior screened-in-porch), and Natale's art studio.

I can't say enough good things about Natale and Sebastien, their vision, their trust in me, and our collaboration. And to top it off, we had a lot of fun along the way.

Welcome home! The Salisbury CT project is really taking shape and I always feel at home on a construction site. This is the view from the front door to the living room and the next view is down the hall towards the kitchen.

Stairs can be a real focal point within any project, so it’s important to allow the design efforts and construction investment a custom stair requires.

A note to those seeing this on facebook – while posts automatically get shared with my old page, I no longer have access to engage. My husband shares lovely comments that he sees on facebook, but I don’t have access to engage. So if you haven’t already, please follow along on Instagram. Thanks.

Tuesdaytip – When given the opportunity to collaborate with a dear friend on something a bit out of your norm, take it! I still feel grateful that brought this project to me a while back. It was a match through for LA based gocarekids.org – a learning campus in El Madrono, Nicaragua. Many probono design projects do not get very far, but Sheri and I were lucky that Go Care had the site, resources, and focus to get this 7,000SF campus built and impact the local community with their youth and educational programs. Always looking for ways to bring service- oriented nonprofit design projects into my work each year.

Tuesday Tip: Reclaimed materials and their backstories. Using reclaimed materials is a smart choice for the environment and usually works to enhance the interest of a design. There is also a backstory that brings a richness to space in a non-physical way. Reclaimed wood, for example, comes from many different sources – barn siding, beams, flooring, etc. Some of our BK house was clad in cypress boards that arrived on site in a rough state. The boards had been used for years as tables in a barn in Pennsylvania – a mushroom drying barn. The wood soaked up the minerals and deposits of the mushrooms, which gives the wood it’s hue and weathered feel.
