🏠 HELPFUL ROOFING SYSTEM & WARRANTY INFORMATION
Many roofing companies advertise “upgraded” roofing systems with impact-resistant shingles and high-wind warranties but then cut corners on critical components like hip and ridge shingles. What many homeowners don’t realize is that improper installation methods can reduce or even void manufacturer warranty coverage.
One common issue seen is contractors cutting standard 3-tab shingles into pieces to use on hips and ridges. This is NOT the correct installation method.
Why is this a problem?
* 3-tab shingles are designed for field installation ONLY and only carry wind warranty of 60 mph. Making it essential to have pre-cut hip and ridge products specifically engineered for ridge installation. (Field of a roof refers to each slope of the roof.)
* They are not engineered to properly contour around hips and ridges
* They lack the sealing strength and nail protection required for ridge applications
* This will impact the roof’s wind performance and manufacturer warranty eligibility
Shingle manufacturers have very specific installation requirements that must be followed for a roofing system to qualify for enhanced warranties and high-wind ratings.
Manufacturers require:
* Their branded pre-cut hip and ridge products specifically engineered for ridge installation
* System components designed for high-wind performance
* Proper installation methods that meet manufacturer specifications
* Specific number of approved accessories and system components to be installed in order for the enhanced warranty coverage to be provided. Each manufacturer is different which makes it important to ask what those requirements are.
