Flower power for central Texas landscapes. These spring flowering trees contribute beauty to home landscapes.

They will be in bloom soon. Fall and winter is the best time to plant trees, at least in Texas where the heat of summer can be brutal on newly planted trees.

There are a number of really good spring flowering trees, but these are 2 good ones for Central Texas.

Oklahoma Redbud – Cercis canadensis var. texensis - deciduous, pink flowers in spring, 12-18 feet tall

Chinese fringetree – Chionanthus retusus – deciduous, white flowers in spring, 15-20 feet tall

Site flowering trees for optimal enjoyment. And, don’t forget to consider the view from inside your home looking out to increase the time you enjoy beautiful flowers.

After a freeze in central Texas, what to do and how to assess cold-damaged landscape plants.

🌱 Once the temperature is above freezing, check soil moisture and water plants that are dry.
🌱If plants have been covered, remove the covering once temperature will stay above freezing.

Will plants recover from freeze damage?
Only time will tell but it can take weeks for the full extent of damage to be evident.

What about pruning after a freeze?
🌱This is a time to be patient and do not go straight for your pruners. For winter damaged shrubs and trees, you can wait until late winter in central Texas to cut away dead material.

What about pruning herbaceous perennials after a freeze?
🌱Again, it is best to wait. Why? The dead foliage and stems will protect and insulate the plant if there is another freeze.

What about succulents that are cold damaged with soft, mushy foliage?
🌱 Go ahead and Clean it off and wait to see if it regrows from roots.

A few of the more cold sensitive landscape plants that may be cold-damaged: rosemary, Indian hawthorne, bottlebrush, pittosporum, foxtail fern, viburnum, agave, star jasmine, fig ivy.

What is there to do during winter in your yard and garden? There are many things and one of the best is to transplant trees and shrubs! It is actually the optimal time of year to do it. Because woody plants can adjust with milder temperature to new growing conditions before the intense heat of summer.

How to Protect Plants In a Freeze in Texas
1. Cover with frost cloth that is secured to the ground. This cloth modifies temperature by trapping radiant heat rising from moist soil so it must touch the ground to capture that heat.
2. Check soil moisture. Wet soil absorbs more heat during the day and radiates it at night. Also, dry roots are more sensitive to cold temperatures.
3. A 2-3 inch deep Mulch helps insulate plants.
4. Water container plants and move to a garage or a protected location outdoors if possible.

Fall is the optimum time to plant shrubs in regions like Texas that have very hot summers with mild winters! Why?
There are actually a number of reasons.
🌱Fall planted landscape shrubs show less transplant shock because of cooler weather.
🌱Plant roots grow when the soil temperature is 40 degrees or higher. In regions with mild winters, soil temperature may rarely be lower than that.
🌱Fall planting allows more time for woody plants like shrubs to become established before the intense heat of summer. Therefore, it increases their chance for survival.
