This high stem density old clear cut we burned in March is responding nicely! Frequent burns in the future will help this develop into a nice savanna/woodland.

Another 30 acres knocked out today! This unit was an easy one because all the surrounding areas have already been burned since February except for one side which was backed up by a blacktop road. Burn conditions are extremely dry right now in our area, and burns should only be attempted by experienced burn managers.

We knocked out 140 acres yesterday. This 550 acre tract was thinned last year. Due to the amount of debris from the logging and broken over midstory, we wanted this section to burn when some 10hr fuels would be consumed to improve accessibility throughout the tract for turkeys and quail. The weather yesterday gave us good results.

Back to back burn days on this project we thinned this past year. Cant wait to see what all pops up now that it has sunlight and litter removed.

Another one down, this dormant season burn will knock back the midstory sweetgums shading out the understory. we’ll follow it up with a growing season fire in 18 months to reduce the stem density of their resprouts.

Finally back at it after the rain. This old clear cut desperately needed some fire. The goal was to top kill back the undesirable mesic hardwood stems to allow sunlight in for native grasses and forbs. If we can get enough fuel to establish, the goal is to restore this area back to native savanna by burning on a short interval. If burning doesn’t get us where we need to go, then we will apply herbicide.
