You keep your thermostat at 78° all day. Then you get home, turn it down to 70°, and wonder why it isn't cooling faster. 🥵
We hear this one a lot during Central Texas summers.
When it's 100°+ outside, your AC isn't simply trying to cool the air by 8 degrees. It's also working to remove the heat that's built up throughout your home all day—your walls, ceilings, windows, furniture and indoor air.
So when you turn the thermostat from 78° to 70°, don't expect your home to cool those 8 degrees quickly. Your AC may need to run for hours to catch up.
Lowering the thermostat doesn't make your AC cool faster. It just gives it a lower target.
Set the temperature where you want it, let the system run, and give it time to catch up.
As the outdoor temperature begins to drop, your home should begin to cool down.
If the indoor temperature continues to rise or doesn't begin to come down as outdoor temperatures fall, that's when it's time to have your system checked.
