“Use your judgment.”
Three words that assume the decision criteria are already understood.
Sound judgment requires clarity on the operational objective, the consequences of delay, and the boundaries of delegated authority. A task list alone leaves much of that context unstated.
A deadline advances. An asset deteriorates. A critical dependency changes. Yesterday’s priorities can become misaligned with today’s operating conditions.
Cost of Delay provides a structured basis for reassessing the sequence: weigh the consequences of waiting against the time and effort required to deliver an outcome.
The leadership opportunity is to make that reasoning explicit.
Sharing the framework and its underlying logic helps frontline teams assess trade-offs, recognize escalation triggers, and adapt within defined boundaries. It also makes decisions easier to explain, challenge, and improve.
That is the broader opportunity explored in this article: stronger decision quality at the point of ex*****on, supported by greater operational ownership.
