If your Mercedes key has stopped working, the key fob will not start the engine any longer. This may be for a number of reasons. Either the key has reached its max number of engine starts set by the manufacturer, or the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL or EVL), is unresponsive, meaning the key will unlock the doors but won't start the car. If the issue is due to a faulty ESL or EVL, it will likely need to be replaced as it's responsible for unlocking the steering wheel.

We sent out a technician to check what happened, just to find that the key was broken, twisted and forcefully taken out of the ignition.
Fortunately we did not have to change the ignition cylinder, only to replace a few wafers to make it turn and start the car again.
