In 1948, Buffalo State University marked a significant milestone with the construction of its first permanent dormitory, designed by James W. Kideney on the site of what is now Moot Hall.

The groundbreaking ceremony on December 6, 1948, was the culmination of nearly two decades of planning and advocacy for permanent student housing. The project included two residence halls connected by a student union, creating not only a place for students to live, but spaces where they could study, gather, make friends, and build a sense of community.

As students move into Buffalo State this week, it’s remarkable to think about how much campus life has changed—and how much has stayed the same.

Today, we’re proud to revisit these photographs, original drawings, and records from the archives and remember the vision behind Buffalo State’s first dormitory. Nearly 80 years later, our relationship with the campus continues, as we remain actively involved in shaping and supporting its built environment. From that first residence hall to the work we do on campus today, we’re honored to be part of Buffalo State’s ongoing story.

Completed in the early 1950s, Buffalo Public School #38 on Vermont Street (now BPS 30) represents an important chapter in Buffalo’s postwar architectural history.

Designed by James William Kideney & Associates, the one- and two-story brick school was conceived in the International Style, emphasizing functional planning, clean architectural lines, natural light, and modern educational facilities. It was part of a notable group of Buffalo schools designed by Kideney, including Schools #12 and #36.

Contemporary accounts recognized School #38 as an exceptional example of modern school architecture. The Buffalo News described it as the most complete school in the district since the 1930s and also featured its built-in facilities and modern conveniences as seen below.

The building reflects an important moment in Buffalo’s history, when school architecture was evolving to accommodate new approaches to education and the needs of a growing postwar population. Rather than relying on the monumental forms of earlier school buildings, School #38 embraced a simpler, functional aesthetic characteristic of mid-century modernism.

Its design is a reminder that some of Buffalo’s most significant architectural history can be found not only in its celebrated civic and commercial buildings, but also in its neighborhood schools—buildings designed with the everyday life of the community in mind.

Public School #38 stands as an important example of Buffalo’s mid-century modern architectural heritage and the work of James William Kideney.

🏛️ In the years following World War II, design professionals played a vital role in shaping the future of American communities. Among the leaders guiding that effort was James W. Kideney, who served as chairman of the Joint Committee of Architects, Engineers and Landscape Architects during the 1940s.

📜 The committee brought together leaders from across design professions to establish coordinated planning standards, advance principles for site selection, and help shape the federal legislative framework that supported post-war reconstruction and community planning.
🤝 Notable members also included renowned Buffalo architect E.B. Green, reflecting the committee's broad influence and distinguished leadership.

🏗️ Through his leadership, James W. Kideney contributed to a pivotal chapter in Western New York architectural and planning history, when interdisciplinary collaboration became essential to rebuilding communities and laying the foundation for future growth.

✈️Between 1950 and 1978, Kideney Architects completed several projects for Bell Aerospace, supporting one of Western New York's most influential aerospace companies during a transformative era of aviation and space exploration.🚀

🏗️From engineering and research facilities to manufacturing, testing, and administrative spaces, these projects were designed to meet the evolving demands of cutting-edge technology and innovation. Together, they reflect a remarkable partnership that contributed to the region's legacy as a center for aerospace advancement.

Today, we're proud to look back on these projects and the role they played in shaping both Bell Aerospace's campus and the history of American innovation.

Sometimes the best discoveries are hiding in plain sight.

15 Genesee Street is right around the block from our current office, and it wasn't until recently that we realized it was a Kideney project. There's something especially meaningful about discovering a piece of our firm's history just steps from our office.

Originally completed in 1930 as the American Savings Bank, the building took on a new chapter in 1950 when Kideney designed an expansion for First National Bank. The project incorporated the neighboring 11 Genesee Street property and transformed the building from its original Stripped Classical style into the streamlined International Style appearance it has today.

The building has continued to evolve over the decades, serving several financial institutions before becoming home to the Buffalo Urban League. Located within the 500 Block Local Historic Preservation District, it's a wonderful example of how thoughtful design can adapt to changing needs while remaining an enduring part of Buffalo's architectural landscape.

It's a reminder that even after all these years, we're still discovering the legacy of James W. Kideney—sometimes on our daily walk to the office.

In the midst of the Great Depression, the Corfu Union Free School District recognized the need for a new school building to meet the demands of a growing community. At the time, our firm, known as Harbach & Kideney, was hired to design plans for the new school. The two-story fireproof structure of red brick and Indiana limestone was funded through a combination of local support and Public Works Administration funding.

Construction began in 1935, with the school opening in February of 1937. Just a few years later, in 1940, the campus was expanded with the addition of a new auditorium.

Now, Pembroke Intermediate School, the building is still in use today for the Pembroke Central School District.

As the school year comes to a close this week for many students across Western New York, we're reflecting on the many educational spaces we've had the privilege to help create over the past 100 years.

Throughout our century of service, Kideney has designed or contributed to countless schools and educational facilities across Western New York, including projects in Amherst, Grand Island, Marilla, West Seneca, Corfu, Elba, Ebenezer, Livonia, Middleport, Orchard Park, Buffalo, Williamsville, Clarence, Tonawanda, and many other communities.

We're proud to have played a role in creating spaces where generations of students have learned, grown, and succeeded.

Congratulations to all students, teachers, administrators, and staff on another successful school year. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

🏗️In 1943, Kideney was engaged in designing an FHA project for 58 apartment units on Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda. The Sheridan Gables, as they were known, still exist and are currently called Sheridan Manor.
