Tuesday Tech Term: Economizer
In commerical HVAC this additional equipment can be installed on a roof top unit (RTU). Many times this equipment is factory installed when the unit is ordered new, with the unit in the photos the economizer was shipped about a month after the unit was installed due the "supply chain issues".
Sometimes referred to as "Free Cooking" the purpose of these economizers is to bring in outside air to cool the indoor space when conditions allow. For example, if a restaurant kitchen has its cooking equipment running and the kitchen is warm, but outside it's cool weather, instead of turning on the compressor to run the air conditioning the unit will open a damper and utilize the fan to draw in the cool outside air.
Sensors are mounted inside and outside of the RTU itself to monitor conditions, a control board determines if the unit should run the compressor or the economizer automatically. Any time the economizer is running instead of the compressor it is saving electricity and therefore saving money.
