Tech Term Tuesdays- today's term is "oil trap".
The picture here is of an ice machine condenser but many times we see a similar issue with mini split air conditioning systems as well. The copper tubing is covered by insulation in the photo, it comes out of the roof in the white PVC pipe and connects to this condenser then returns back to the inside machine in the other insulated copper line. What you see in this photo is that tubing looped vertically multiple times, every time those lines complete another loop they create an oil trap. The oil gets stuck or "trapped" in the bottom of each loop and can not make it's way back to the compressor. Eventually all the oil from the compressor could get stuck in these loops and cause premature failure. It's kind of like driving your car without oil.

Tech Term Tuesday: Manufacturer Technical Training.

This morning our guys are getting updated on the latest service, installation and repair information in regards to Manitowoc Ice . Thanks to our friends over at United Refrigeration for hosting this Training program.

Traing like this are mandatory from many different manufacturers to allow us to keep our certifications for installation and warranty service for their equipment. This helps us better serve our customers and keep their equipment running it's best.

Tech Term Tuesdays: Long draw beer line cleaning.

These draft beer systems are glycol chilled and can range in length from as short as 10 feet to as long as hundreds of feet from the cooler to the bar. As many of you know some of these specialty beers can be quite expensive, so it is important to keep the system working at top performance. Regular scheduled cleaning insures the beer flows through the lines without agitation to allow for a perfect pour and fresh beer in every glass.

At Refrigeration Sales and Service not only can we clean a draft beer system, but we are also certified installers and extensively trained to service these systems. So if you are having issues with your draft system such as too much foam, improper temperature or other issues we can address them when we are cleaning the system or between cleaning with a separate service call.

Tuesday Tech Term: Product Training Events

Many times during the year we attend training programs put on by different manufacturers and suppliers. This helps up stat up to date on the newest version of products to offer to our customers. We also learn about the latest service issues going on with equipment we may already have in the field. Our goal is to stay up to date with the newest technology and equipment to best serve our customers.

Here is another "Tuesday Tech Term"

These brass pieces are "Quick Connect Fittings" these fittings often times are used on the ends of pre charged refrigeration lines. May times manufactures that sell equipment direct to consumers, especially online, will use these fittings. You will find these types of fittings on DIY home mini split systems, commerical ice machines, and sometimes on commerical walk-in coolers and freezers. These fittings are used on systems that will advertise that they can be installed without special equipment or "can be installed by anyone". When tightened with a wrench the foil seal in these fittings opens and allows the refrigerant to flow throughout the system. But if not done correctly these are a very common source of leaks on these types of systems. In most cases the money you will "save" by not hiring a professional to install the system will end up costing you much more in repairs later.

Out with the old and in with the new. The 2013 gray Ford van has been with us since it had 5 miles on it. Bob drove this truck for more then 8 years and racked up over 100,000 miles. Today when we traded it in the truck has over 132,000 miles and has been to a ridiculous amount of service calls for us over the last 10 years. The "new" to us RAM promaster is a 2019 high roof. With the taller roof on this newer style truck it will allow us to deliver and move around larger equipment for our customers and to various jobs. Next step is getting some ladder racks installed and some inside storage cabinets!!

Tuesday Tech Term: Economizer

In commerical HVAC this additional equipment can be installed on a roof top unit (RTU). Many times this equipment is factory installed when the unit is ordered new, with the unit in the photos the economizer was shipped about a month after the unit was installed due the "supply chain issues".

Sometimes referred to as "Free Cooking" the purpose of these economizers is to bring in outside air to cool the indoor space when conditions allow. For example, if a restaurant kitchen has its cooking equipment running and the kitchen is warm, but outside it's cool weather, instead of turning on the compressor to run the air conditioning the unit will open a damper and utilize the fan to draw in the cool outside air.

Sensors are mounted inside and outside of the RTU itself to monitor conditions, a control board determines if the unit should run the compressor or the economizer automatically. Any time the economizer is running instead of the compressor it is saving electricity and therefore saving money.

We had a busy week with some heavy lifting involved. A 21ft length of 3" black iron pipe weighs about 160lbs. We installed 12 lengths of 3" pipe, and in total about 1000ft of gas line. All on the roof of a 125,000sq ft building. National Fuel installed a new meter to supply the building with more pressure to heat the whole building. The Ridgid Megapress tool was a huge help in getting this job done with 0 leaks and a lot less sore muscles.

Think of cleaning your ice machine like brushing your teeth. You should do your best to keep it clean on a day to day basis, but every 6 months you should call in the professionals to give it a deep clean. Many commerical ice makers can have the production and quality of the ice extremely reduced just from being dirty. With the correct tools and cleaning products we can have your ice machine running at it's best. With a regular scheduled cleaning it could stay running at it's best for a long time to come.

Sometimes replacement equipment needs to get installed in strange places or at weird angles due to size differences between the old equipment and the new equipment. Or in this case the evaporator coil was added in a new location in an oddly shaped walk-in cooler. At the request of the customer we angled the coil to provide the best airflow around the space. The customer was extremely happy with the final result and very excited to get this system up and running before the weather gets warmer. This will help keep all their product at the proper temperature.
