IN THE FIELD FRIDAY | “Not for the faint of heart, monitor!”

This week, we’re checking in with Dennis Rivera, Project Monitor / Air Sampling Technician, who is putting in the work at the Brooklyn House of Detention in Brooklyn, NY!

Watts is providing third-party asbestos project monitoring and air sampling services during asbestos abatement activities, helping ensure the work is performed in accordance with applicable New York State Department of Labor and New York City Department of Environmental Protection requirements.

From monitoring abatement activities to collecting air samples and documenting conditions in the field, our team plays an important role in supporting worker safety and regulatory compliance throughout the process. Check out more of our teams work at https://watts-ae.com/expertise/service:asbestos-lead-consulting/.

As Dennis puts it, “Only the brave survive this site!” A little fieldwork humor, a lot of attention to detail, and a team committed to getting the job done right.

40 Years of Watts, One Amazing Celebration!

Earlier this week we celebrated 40 years of Watts with the people who have helped make our firm what it is today: our employees, alumni, clients, partners, friends, and owners.

Our 40th Anniversary Open House gave us the chance to reconnect with familiar faces, meet new ones (or ones we never met in person, just email), share stories, and celebrate the relationships that have shaped Watts over the past four decades.

There was plenty of conversation, plenty of catching up, great food (shout out to Acqua event team), and some seriously good music from Lewis & Clark. Most importantly, it was a reminder that after 40 years, it’s the people and relationships behind the work that matter most.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so special. We’re grateful for the people who have been part of the Watts story and excited for everything still ahead.

40 years of making space for what matters.

Watts in the Field… the Networking Field! 🤝

September was a busy month for networking, relationship building, and connecting with organizations across Western New York!

On September 15 UB’s Center for Tomorrow hosted one of NYS ESD’s Project Pop-Up events, focused on opportunities for MWBEs in Western New York. ESD has been hosting these relationship-building events across the state, and Watts has been fortunate to attend several.

These events are a great opportunity to learn about upcoming procurements, connect one-on-one with representatives from New York State and local agencies, and continue building relationships throughout our industry.

Then on September 16, the 2026 WNY Latino Small Business Symposium brought together NYS minority-, women-, and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses, state agencies, and community organizations. Hosted by NYPA, Canal Corporation, NFTA, and NYS ESD, the event offered valuable insight into how businesses can work with these agencies and, just as importantly, create connections with one another.

With September being National Hispanic Heritage Month, the symposium also featured a panel of Latino and Latina business owners who shared personal experiences and insights from their careers. A theme that really stood out was the importance of representation and visibility, as Luis Rodriguez put it, “Keep being seen.”

Jessie Henschel was pleased to represent Watts at both events and connect with so many ambitious businesses, agencies, and organizations. We’re already looking forward to next year! 👏

In the Field Friday. This week, we’re heading to Bronx Community College to take a closer look at the Hall of Fame for Great Americans!

Built in 1901, the Hall of Fame was designed by renowned architect Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White and was the first hall of fame in the US. The 630-foot-long open-air loggia features colonnades, historic plaques, and bronze portrait busts honoring prominent Americans.

Today, the Hall of Fame is part of Bronx Community College, and planned renovation work will address loose limestone, mortar, and terra cotta roof tiles along the walkway.

Before that work can begin, Watts is providing hazardous materials surveys to identify potential environmental hazards that could be disturbed during construction, including asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, PCBs in caulks and sealants, universal waste, hazardous materials, and mold-contaminated building materials.

Identifying these materials early helps the project team plan for safe construction, develop appropriate budgets, and protect building occupants and workers.

From a 1901 landmark to today’s environmental planning, our work often takes us behind the scenes of some pretty remarkable places.

In the Field Friday - This week, we’re heading to SUNY Delhi to highlight the Evenden Tower and Applied Welding Lab ADA Upgrades.

Watts provided civil and site design services to support accessibility improvements and site upgrades across campus. Work included site utility improvements, paving reconstruction, and improvements to accessible routes.

One of the more unique site solutions was at the Applied Welding Lab, where an accessible entrance was needed. Instead of constructing a traditional ramp, Watts designed an alternate accessible route around an existing gazebo, making use of the available space while also creating room for bicycle racks. 🚲

The project also included paving reconstruction near O’Connor Hall, MacDonald Hall, and Murphy Hall, along with evaluation of an existing retaining wall to help identify potential repairs and precautions during construction.

Another example of how thoughtful site design can improve accessibility and functionality while working within an existing campus environment.

Throwing it back to National Trail Mix Day! On August 31, we celebrated with one of our favorite kinds of office treats - a snack break! Our team in the Buffalo office grabbed some trail mix from the kitchen and, of course, we had to learn a few fun facts along the way.

🥜 Trail mix has a long history. Although two surfers claimed credit for creating it in 1968 by combining peanuts and raisins, versions of the snack existed long before then.

🫐 Pemmican was an early portable snack. Native Americans made nutrient-dense mixtures of dried meat, berries, and fat to provide energy during long journeys and hunting expeditions.

🥜 Trail mix is also known as GORP, often said to stand for “Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts.”

🫐 And in Australia and New Zealand, a similar snack mix is known as Scroggin!

A big thank you to Amanda, our Administrative Assistant, for putting together this fun treat for the team! 🙌

In the Field Friday 🚧🌳

This week, we’re taking you to Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, NY, where Watts Environmental Scientist Jett Perillo was in the field providing environmental monitoring during the demolition of the White Barn Stable.

According to Park employees, the stable originally housed horses belonging to one of the early wives in the Knox family, who apparently had quite an affinity for horses. The family eventually built a larger stable just uphill from the original.

The White Barn Stable had seen better days, and Watts was there to help ensure its demolition was completed safely and in compliance with Industrial Code Rule 56, Section 11.5-Controlled Demolition. As Project Monitor and Air Sampling Technician, Jett conducted daily air sampling throughout the demolition to monitor for the release of loose debris or hazardous materials.

Jett captured these photos while monitoring the demolition, giving us a unique look at the work from the field.
